365 Days That Count - Day 308 - Catering with Katrine ♥︎ 1000km's of driving in 1 week for Mini Boden! 🏁 Day 1 in Simon's Town. ✓

in #life7 years ago

It was Tjarla's mum, Katrine who first got me back into the production industry 2 years ago. I had resigned and decided to move to London but was sitting with a bit of time on my hands in the interim so she asked me if I wanted to help her on a job.

Mini Boden is an English kids catalogue and one of the art directors, Victoria is a good friend of Katrine's. They met when Boden used Katrine's home as a casting location many years ago and since then Bay Farm has become the home of Mini Boden castings and Katrine has become their caterer. On that first job I was a runner/everything and with Katrine's help got to know the team well. Although being a runner literally involves a lot of running and wasn't the most stimulating role I've ever held, it was nice to be back amongst a bunch of crazy creatives once more and in hindsight it was the beginning of what was to become a new chapter in my life. I made a good impression on the client and photographer and therefore the production house and was subsequently put forward for other jobs on other shoots. The next time they came for a shoot they had two teams at different locations so Katrine asked me to run the catering for her on one of them. Again in hindsight, having never done any kind of catering previously it was this job that moulded people's impression of me as a caterer and the reason I now do so much of it on my own.

So 2 years later, having got into the industry on a few different levels, I was excited to get a call from Katrine asking me to help her with Boden again.

One of the best things about Mini Boden is that they often use the same kids, so although the team may change you feel at home on set amongst the models and their parents which makes a big difference in the first few days of a shoot when everyone is getting to know each other.

This time however, I knew most of the team so was looking forward to my first day and the chance to flex my catering muscles once more! :) We were shooting in Simon's Town which is beautiful but also convenient as I got to set up in the parking lot which is a lot less admin than trying to work on the beach although in between meals I did get a bit bored so I made myself useful taking snacks down to the team on the beach.

My favourite part of working for Katrine instead of a production house as I normally do, is that when lunch is done, I'm done!

This means that by about 2:30pm I'm on the road. In comparison to the hours I usually pull, it feels like a holiday and means that I can fit things like gym, eating and sleeping into my routine which is good for both my body and my mind. This job involved a lot of driving but I didn't mind at all when I got home and the sun was still in the sky! The first day went as smoothly as first days can and I managed to fetch the next days lunch from Katrine and squeeze in gym before collapsing on the sofa in preparation for my next 4am wake up call!

This production malarkey is not for the feint hearted! I feel like I haven't been home in months which is true to a certain extent and the excuse I'm using for why my house looks like a literal pig sty!!! 🐷 But that's a problem for another day, actually another month! :)

Love,

Daisy xx
