What is Sleep ?

in #science8 years ago

Sleep is defined as the natural period of consciousness that occurs when the body is restored which is characterized by low awareness and minimal metabolic state of the body.

Medical facts say that during sleep, exactly the first 2 hours of your sleep. the body produces growth hormones that play a role in the growth process and repair damaged cells. there is also another hormone produced during sleep, the cortisol hormone. the hormone that serves to neutralize stress and refresh our body to face the new day.

Ideal Sleep Time

The ideal time to sleep depends on a variety of facts, including: health, physical endurance and mental activity. So between infants and adults is different time needed to sleep.

ideal time to sleep:

  1. Newborn baby - requires sleep for 16 hours per day.
  2. Baby 6 Months - drops to 13 hours per day.
  3. Teenagers - 9 hours per day.
  4. Adults - requires an ideal sleep time of 7 to 8 hours per day

Well this is, most importantly, the explanation of the researchers in the journal that @Daily-Science found. following his research.....

1. Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine 1996-1998

explains that people who work more than 60 hours per week and sleep not normally will increase their risk of having Hearth Attack or Heart Attack twice as much. The study involved 260 men aged 40-79 years.

2. Journal Archives of General Psychiatry Year 2002

This explanation is more severe again. for me it's a really hard..

This journal explains that a person who sleeps between 6-7 hours per day has the lowest average mortality. The highest number life expectancy is in people who average sleep 7 every day. For those who sleep more than 8 a day, then the risk of death increased by 12% of the sleep 7 days. while those who sleep less than 5 hours per day the risk of death is lower than those who sleep more than 8 hours. the conclusion is the ideal sleep for adults is 7 hours per day. this study warns us that excess sleep and lack of sleep can increase the risk of our deaths. The study involved 1.1 million people with ages of 30 to 102 years.

3. Journal Self-Reported Sleep Duration as Predictor of All-Cause Mortality: Results from the JACC Study, Japan.

This journal was written by Dr. Akiko Tamakoshi and Dr. Yoshiyuki Ohno. Their study involved 104,010 participants consisting of 43,852 men and 60,158 women. this journal suggests that sleep duration of 7 hours at night has the lowest risk of death. it is also known that men sleep more than women. (yeah i agree with that :D)

What's the Sleep Cycle?

In the cycle there are 2 phases of NREM (Non Rapid Eye Movement) and REM (Rapid Eye Movement). each phase occurs about 90 to 110 minutes, except for the REM phase which only occurs for 10 minutes at the end of sleep.

How to pay sleep debt?

Sleep debt is logically like this, you guys for 5 days sleep just 6 hours. it means you still have debt 1 hour every day. the plan of the sixth day you want to sleep 12 hours to pay the debt 5 hours (1hours x 5 days)

what your plan is Right?......... was wrong. said Jim Horne

paying sleep debt was a myth. if you force overtime the previous day, then the next day sleep normally. ie during the ideal time or 7 hours, so that your body back fresh.

Sleep Deprivation What are the consequences?

Surely you already know the consequences. see the section of the research journal. @Daily-Science summarized the consequences of increased risk of death and increased risk 2 times for heart attack.

Interesting article with good references. As far as sleep debt goes, I've always been a fan of working out to exhaustion so I get a deeper sleep, which is more intense and in my own experience, more efficient. I might sleep a little longer, but I feel way more refreshed afterwards.
