Rain Collecting Automatic Chicken Waterer

in #dtube8 years ago

Continuing in the effort to upload my older YouTube videos.

When we first moved out to the farm and became CHICKEN TENDERS (a person that cares for chickens... ba da bum) I decided to try my hand at making a chicken watering system that would utilize the rain catchment from the coop roof. The delivery system was something called chicken nipples. I know... funny name, but that's what those little drinkers are called. The chickens can get water whenever they need it with little mess!

Enjoy the video!

That is an awesome idea!

Thank you! Now... I got it back up and running LOL. Those bricks fell out from under it after some ground settling. The barrel is sitting waiting for me to get my act together.

Now that makes some good sense. Great idea to put those two things together - rain barrel and chicken waterer!

Thanks! :) Sometimes I have some good ideas LOL

Ingenious I say! Great idea! Looks pretty snazzy too.

Interesting so how does it work as an automatic drinker. Do the chickens peck at it or something. Very neat design.

Yes the chickens peck at the little drinkers plugged into the PVC pipe.

how neat. thanks

YES work smarter not harder!! With it being winter in the northern hemisphere do you have any tips or tricks to keep the water from freezing?

this will save lots of lives,, especially in subsaharan thirsty counties in Africa
I hope this kind of idea could reach some international attention

this is awesome , and a good job

That's such a neat idea! Do you have problem with stagnation?

I would really like to have something like this that works in the winter time too. It has been down below zero this past week where I am at. One idea that I had was somehow have a tunnel that went from the chicken coop to the greenhouse where a waterer could be inclosed in a fence to keep the chickens away from the plants. The tunnel would probably allow cold air into the greenhouse though. Still thinking about this. If anyone else has some good ideas, I would love to hear them.

putting it in a greenhouse would be a great idea. The large barrel of water would have some thermal mass that would help stabilize the temps in the greenhouse too. A small heater in the greenhouse if it gets below freezing for an extended period of time would be good too.

Woa, thats a lot less intimidating than I thought it would be! Question though, how do the chickens know to drink from those little red spouts? Was there any training/learning time involved?
