Visit to the Local Food Fair in Leuven (Hapje Tapje)
Today it was time to eat some really great food! Every year there's this big food fair in my home-town of Leuven, almost every restaurant in town sets up their own stand, where they offer cheap small dishes, which cost between €2 and €8. This was my third time attending this awesome food fair and for me, it was the best edition yet!
As usual, there was quite a crowd, but despite that everything seemed to go a lot smoother compared to previous years. For example, this time I wasn't standing still for more than 2 seconds while I was walking through the narrow corridors of the Muntstraat (a narrow street in Leuven). Don't get me wrong, it was still very claustrophobic feeling at times, but at least everyone moved on pretty quickly.
The food and drinks we had were really great. I actually didn't eat that much, since it was quite hot outside, I do not tend to be that hungry when it's around 30°C (86°F). Still, the things I did eat were absolutely delicious! I had a great empanada, paired with some really spicy hot-sauce & also some great beers and cocktails.
That cocktail you see there was actually pretty unique, it was made with walnut port. I know what you're thinking: "Port in a cocktail?!?". Yeah, that's exactly what I was thinking at first, especially because it was so hot outside, but it was really great and refreshing to be honest.
We also had a small portion of fish&chips, I'm sure that the Brits would do it a lot better than this, but it was still pretty nice. Too bad those chips were anything but original, I was definitely missing the vinegary taste. Still pretty good though!
We also bought some sushi, which was definitely fresh but not the best we've had.
We ate a bunch more than this, but I had already made a post last year about this same event. Those other dishes were basically the same dishes we had last year. Yeah I know, I'm definitely a creature of habit... Did try some new things though ;-)
I'm trying to figure out the fish from the chips? When you say vinegar... it has to be...
Yeah, there was just one pretty small piece of fish.
Good to know, I think I did have that one on my trip to the UK. I swear I remember using a bottle that looked a lot like that one. Could be wrong though.
I can't eat Fish and Chips without dousing them in this brown vinegar. I think its just a UK thing, but I may be wrong. Those chips look strange to me, very much like the fish.

Looks like a real nice event glad it went well and people kept moving those fish and chips look good and that cocktail with port is novel but glad it was refreshing in that heat

Street food market looks quite good, as you mentioned in the heat of the day, better to keep moving.

That is pretty awesome. We have a town near me that does something like this every Spring as well. I wrote a post about it a year or so ago. They pair different beers with various small plates. It looks like you had a lot more options of things to try than we did though!
What a lovely venue @daan. Food fairs can be so fun, especially when the participating vendors are excellent! The fish and chips look pretty tasty, perfect with a nice cold beer on a hot day :)
