Tools needed

  1. An Android Phone

  2. Autodesk SketchBook Mobile App :
You can actually get this on the official Google Playstore. Make sure you download the flame in the first query after searching.

  3. Your time : Needn't I say this, but you need it and in fact it's the most needed tool in this tutorial.

The 10 Commandments

Before we dive into the world of cartooning, I will like give us some rules to follow in cartooning with Autodesk.

  1. Don't dream big quickly , start from something simple
  2. Make sure you have an amazing RAM in your phone to prevent lagging
  3. Try to sacrifice your time
  4. You need to give your time
  5. It needs more time
  6. Don't ever rush things
  7. Show the curves
  8. Straight the lines
  9. Mark the corners
  10. Never ignore anywhere

Let's cartoon!

Open our Autodesk SketchBook and click on on the second icon from the left. Click on import image and choose your preferable image(I will recommend simple pictures for starters). Now let's start marking out our pictures.

But before that, set your pencils to the following properties.

  • Pencil type: Technical pen
  • Brush type: Marker
  • Size: 1.0
  • Color: black

Setting up layers

Upon importing your image, click on the second icon from the right, it will shows the layers, making the image layer, the first one and a blank layer as the second one. **Switch the position of the layers by dragging the image layer down **
After doing that, click on the blank layer, it will also show your image.

Now mark out all the edges, lines in the image as shown bellow.

Note:

  1. Click on the small icon below the app to undo, redo, use your two fingers to zoom the picture and change the orientation.

  2. Make sure that all the lines joined together. Because when we will be filling with colours, there won't be lapses.

  3. Click on the layer icon and click on the eye icon to be checking your progress from time to time.

  4. Try to be perfect as much as possible, although you can't be perfect but to be.

After marking out and checking that ends meet, let's start filling with colours.

-Click on the layer icon and show the image layer by clicking on the eye to open it.

  • Make sure you are filling on the sketch layer
  • click on the second icon from top left and click on fill as shown below

  • Click on the color icon

  • Click on the icon marked on the image below

  • Navigate the marked icon to your desired color on the image, while the fill icon is still active, click on part of image that you want to fill one by one. You can undo any error and try to see any loophole in the image.

Good, easy to grasp tutorial. It's going to be difficult doing that on a phone of smaller screen resolution. Brilliant work @cypher01. The daily quote is great too!

Actually, you are right, but nevertheless, there is no problem with trying. Hope you understood me very well?

Hmm I like that point of view. Yeah I do understand you. I'm on it already and I'll show you when I'm true!

Hey cypher01,

In Utopian, we are all about open source projects and their contributions.

First, if you want to make a graphics contributions, you need to use a proper vector based program to produce required assets. Follow the guides, create a post with our template and provide necessary files.

Second, if you want to make tutorial well you need to read about it. It also needs to be related to open source.
