Making Red Roses the Audiobook 05

Started with a scare. After paying the audiobook narrator, Kira Omans, Red Roses went into ACX’s QC cache. They told me to do this, and then put the audiobook on hold. You know, because of the music and sound that needs to be mixed in.

Only Red Roses got approved by ACX over the weekend. Couldn’t call to put the book on hold until Monday morning. When I called, the book had already been passed onto retail. Luckily, they were able to stop the book progressing there.

So now in cruise control. The stress of working with talent finished. All bills paid. Audiobook on hold. Waiting for a review from AudioFile magazine.

This move actually a change to the marketing plan.

Had originally thought to release Red Roses the audiobook on ACX, without music and sound. Because their customers are old fashion with single narration making the best audiobooks. They might be right? It makes it more about the story.

So, if I released a version with only spoken word, then the next version would have music on chapter headings, and this second version would go to ACX next. Then give a copy to Rike Luxx. Maybe get some more reviews. Then finally, at a later date, have Red Roses completely mixed with sound for retail distribution across all audiobook sites.

Only for reasons identified in my next Making Red Roses the Audiobook entry, decided to mix the first two files right away. This got me to thinking about something someone said at the first HEAR Now Festival in Kansas City, mix in the sound floor first, and then build in with music.

I have many roles in this production, Executive Producer, Author, Audio Engineer, and Marketer.

So as an Audio Engineer, mixing this book, and wanting to provide the greatest audio experience remains my greatest concern.

Still have the Advance Listener Copy (ALC) in with AudioFile magazine. Will most likely send the ALC to the Voice Arts Awards as well because of early bird registration. Kira Omans reading after all stands alone.

I’m taking my time with mixing music and sound into a spoken word performance.

Going to release Red Roses with full audiobook production to 30 audiobook channels that include Audible, iTunes, and downpour.com, in the near future.
