"We thought stolen data was removed" Mark Zuckerberg said in the American Congress

in #technology7 years ago

Facebook thought the data that had leaked to Cambridge Analytica had been removed by that company. The social network thought that the case around the stolen data was 'a closed book'.

That's what Facebook owner Mark Zuckerberg said in the American Congress. He also said that it was 'clearly a mistake' to assume that this data had been removed.

Zuckerberg also said sorry for the scandal around Cambridge Analytica. He wants his business to change and proactively intervenes in the future to not go wrong again. "We've made a lot of mistakes, I've started Facebook from my student room, it's impossible to get that big without making mistakes."

Help with Russia research

In his investigation into Russian interference in the presidential elections, special prosecutor Robert Mueller receives help from Facebook. Zuckerberg says he is working on Mueller's research and is working on changes. He told the Congress that he himself had not been questioned. "I know we are working with him," he said. Without giving details.

Facebook is not sure if all Russian 'trolls' have been banned from Facebook. "It is a continuing arms race, it is unrealistic to assume that people who do this in Russia for their work are no longer on Facebook, that we are 100% successful in stopping."

Hundreds of accounts blocked

According to Facebook and the US intelligence services, the Russian agency Internet Research Agency, with an army of fake accounts and fake messages, has tried to influence public discussions. Those perpetrators are called 'trolls'.

Influencing would have happened in the American presidential elections and in the British referendum on EU membership. Zuckerberg promises everything to prevent repetition. Hundreds of accounts have now been blocked.

Do not listen

According to Zuckerberg, there are all kinds of theories about what Facebook does with data. The company would listen in with the microphone and sell all kinds of personal data to advertisers.

It is 'a conspiracy theory' that catches Facebook about what happens to someone, Zuckerberg said. He said that Facebook does not sell data to advertisers, but only places the advertisement with relevant users.

Are you ready with the social network after the Facebook scandal? That way you get a life without Facebook.

I better have a back up of all my photos I uploaded on Facebook. The time might come that Facebook will no longer be operational and will only be just a history.

Is this issue pertaining to privacy, security and confidentiality just an oversight by the Facebook founders? This should never have happened. Will people still be able to feel secure and not feel paranoid? Can we still trust Mark Zuckerberg?

We certainly trust Zuckerberg with too much. They've broken that trust, and this has gone too far, specifically with this whole thing of thinking the case was 'a closed book' without really knowing anything is just silly

Absolutely true..!

LOL whoops... 'clearly a mistake' to assume that this data had been removed". Yeah the whole thing was a mistake Zucc. GL in the public eye
