Hummingbirds in Costa Rica.
Hello fellow nature fans. While in the Monteverde Cloud Forest in Costa Rica, we went to a place that said it had a "Hummingbird Garden". We weren't totally sure what that meant, so we went to check it out. Turns out it was a cool, shady clearing in the wilderness that was packed full of hummingbird feeders. lol
Now, one thing I never knew until recently was that Costa Rica is where one species of hummingbird migrates to when they overwinter. Thanks to @reconnectnature for the info! That's quite a trip from up here in Pennsylvania, USA!
Now, I'm not as up-to-snuff on my hummingbird identification as I would like to be, so I don't know what species these are. If any of you steemians do know, please feel free to chime in. There were at least six different types, it looked like though. These birds were everywhere too! I wish I had take some wider shots so you can see the whole area, but I was too focused on trying to get closeups, which didn't turn out too great anyway.
Everyone enjoys seeing hummingbirds, but HEARING them in this kind of concentration was also pretty awesome. It sounded like you were standing in the middle of a bee hive made up of very large bees. There were probably 30+ of the birds at any given moment, chowing down on what was probably around 25 nectar feeders. It sounds like tiny dive-bombers were buzzing around your head!
I plan on going back to Costa Rica in the next year or two, and when that happens I'll definitely be visiting this place again. I promise to get some better photos showing the whole area too!

Omg so cool I already miss all those beautiful hummingbirds :) The first species is a Violet Sabrewing (Campylopterus hemileucurus), the second one I am not sure which species this is, the third one is a Green Violetear (Colibri thalassinus) and the last one is a Green-crowned Brilliant (Heliodoxa jacula). And I am sorry to correct you, but as far as I know there is just one hummingbird species in Costa Rica that is known to be a winter resident. Actually, many of the hummingbirds in Costa Rica are endemic (to Costa Rica and western Panama). However for other north American birds Costa Rica is indeed an important place to overwinter ;)

you are welcome :) although I have a background in Biology I am also not really a birder, but I guess in the 3 months Costa Rica I kind of was one ;) haha :)
(slow clap) very good job on getting those speedy little critters. I've been photography birds recently and the smaller faster ones take a whole skill set to capture. Well done! Following so I can get some more of that in my feed.
