Aquaponics - The ultimate Food Solution ?
Aquaponics is a combination of Aquaculture and Hydroponics. That is firstly Aquaculture, where fish are grown in a "cultured" or controlled environment, and secondly, Plants (mainly food crops) which are also grown in a cultured environment without being in the ground, but in a growing media such as expanded clay or vermiculite.
Aquaponics combines the two described above, so that water circulates from the fish tanks through the growing media where you are growing the food crop. This works perfectly when the system is set up properly because the water from the fish tank provides the fertilizer for the plants, and the growing media with the plants filters out all the fish poo and impurities and returns clean water to the fish tank. In this system, the plants grow very quickly and no other source of fertilizer is needed. The fish also grow quickly, and the only input into the system is some fish food and a top-up of water occasionally, and of course, new fish fingerlings as you harvest your mature fish.
The only water that is lost in Aquaponics is what evaporates for the system and transpires through the leaves of the plants....the water loss is very minimal compared to growing crops in soil outside. In a world where water supply is increasingly constrained and fresh food is getting more expensive, this is a great solution to the global food security problem.
