Zeto: Introducing a Smart Refrigeration Management System For the Sake of Customers’ Health
My soul fills with joy and optimism anytime I know that there are companies taking care of us, ordinary consumers. I shall explain, why. Our life revolves around money. Every sector of economy tries to suck as many bucks out of a consumer’s pocket as possible, at any means. The food supply chain is, probably, the most revenue-centric (say, corrupted) business today. Every party, involved in this segment, does its best to cut expenses to the minimum while making the maximum profit.
Such as, food producers use cheap, low-quality raw materials to reduce the cost of production. Logistics companies usually do not have specially equipped trucks to transport perishable products because having them is too expensive. Warehouses often violate goods storage regulations, while retailers are ever-inventive to sell subpar products. Foodborne illnesses, adulteration of foodstuffs, and product recalls are what a common consumer has to struggle from. Zeto Project is here to address the current problems of the global food supply industry.
What is Zeto?
Zeto is all about keeping the food safe at every stage of the supply chain, from production to the supermarket shelf.
Zeto is an existing company from Ireland specializing in developing software and IoT (Internet of Things) solutions for the cold chain industry. Now, they decided to introduce Zetochain, a blockchain platform which will ensure the highest quality of food being sold and the full transparency in the refrigeration chain management.
Marrying IoT technologies, Big Data Analytics, and the Blockchain, Zeto will create a scalable, global food-safety supply chain. The principle of Zeto work is the following:
There will be blockchain-enabled IoT sensors made by the Zeto Company, which will be used by every participant of a cold chain. These sensors will control the environmental parameters (humidity, temperature, door open/close, etc.) inside a truck, container, refrigerator, or wherever they are installed in, and send this data to the blockchain. Should any of these parameters deviate from the set thresholds, a responsible party will be instantly informed about an issue and will be able to take appropriate measures, for example, accept or refuse the delivery.
At the same time, product packages will have Zeto Labels. The Zeto platform will write a smart contract for every product label where its environmental conditions will be clearly stated. Then such a product will be placed in a cold facility, stuffed with the Zeto real-time tracking system. If something goes wrong, the responsible side will be notified. When the package is moved from one cold room to another (say, from a truck to a warehouse fridge), the Zeto system will automatically detect these movements and record this information on the blockchain. These records get updated anytime when some changes occur. The smart contract is considered complete when the point-of-sale verifies that the food received is safe.
As a result, with Zeto, we will have a complete lifetime of a package written on the distributed ledger with the help of smart contracts. When customers want to view a product’s lifecycle, they can scan a package label using a Zeto app installed on their mobile gadgets.
By the way, Zeto plans to have two mobile applications. The first is meant for the cold chain participants. It will have appropriate functionality to track and manage product packages throughout the supply chain. Users here will be assigned with different permissions based on their role in the chain.
Another application will be designed for customers. It essentially will be a scanner for the Zeto labels, which are put on product packages. Both customers and cold chain participants will receive Zeto tokens for using these apps and performing relevant tasks.
Who and How will Benefit from Zeto?
Obviously, every party involved in the food supply industry can use the Zeto blockchain solution including food manufacturers, transportation companies, food storage facilities, retailers, restaurants, and, surely, we – ultimate buyers. Advantages claimed by Zeto’s whitepaper are numerous. A few of them are:
- A removed risk of records falsification
- Automation of human tasks in the cold chain workflow
- Better investigation of issues
- Better relationships and transparency between food supply chain parties
- Decreased risk of PR scandals, tarnishing a good name of a brand
- Enhanced customer awareness
- Improved food safety standards
- Minimized products waste and recalls
- Prevented retail loses
