There was a corporal punishment during my your school years
It was the bad teaching habits that did more damage to us pupils back then from our primary and elementary school years.
I went to the primary school very early, I didn't went to pre-school years like what they call nursery school so I went directly into being grade one. In the school near our village from grade one up to four it was called a primary school while in other schools where they have the complete grades levels from grade one up to six it was called an elementary school.
But on private schools where the school tuition fees are about as expensive as that compared to other levels they have the pre-school nursery where the pupils are taught in a very good environment of class the basic things in learning plus more like educational tours and such but I am not sure if in private schools they are allowed to hit the children with sticks because in public schools that I went for my early schooling it was allowed back then in the 80's. So to see another kid being whacked with their butt by a teacher's stick is really scary because more often you are hit hard particularly if you had done some bad mistake like fighting with other pupils, so to print on your brain that it was not good you will have to receive that teacher's stick.
I can't remember if I was hit by a stick by our teacher in my primary school, it is just too distant memory to remember but I know that they hot pupils when they maybe fight each other or commit a bad mistake, hitting the hands also is allowed in the whole of the 80's and maybe up to early years of the 90's. Some of my teachers in my primary school years are actually my neighbors so at least they know me and gave me some slack, after all I was a good kid back then and didn't do anything naughty that could land me from the teacher's stick.
My only complain about my primary and elementary school years is that I went to a public school, the teaching there is really not good aside from having a corporal punishment being allowed. In many instances my grade six teacher would put us into a marathon writing session with my classmate copying paragraphs from a book for us to copy to our own notebooks. The reason for it is that the district superintendent will visit our class at anytime so we needed to look busy so we have to write and write for days until my writing hands hurt, Also the sixth grade teacher didn't let the blackboard erased so that it will look like that she was busy teaching us pupils with many topics.
I already knew it back then that it was a wrong thing to do, pretending to teach us but we actually didn't learn from her but suffered some corporal punishments from time to time. Some of my teachers also sell food at the school and there was this grade five teacher of mine who actually have a store beside her classroom we can buy some snacks and breads there. I was once assigned with my classmates to fetch water for her sweeet refreshments that she also sells, I was too naïve to follow her commands to make us fetch water from a far distance making us carry heavy loads in those times, but she was our teacher and we have to obey.
My teachers sold a lot of breakfast meals and snack every class day. It was a captured market so they are just attracted to do it.
There was this incident where this sixth grade teacher of mine was pulling up the side burns of her pupils for some punishment reason I can't remember anymore. She would pull it up and it would hurt of course. She would ask us if it hurts, if you say "no" she would then let go and proceed to other pupils, all of us boys in the class and some of us pupils not including the girls figured it out fast but one of my classmates didn't get it and got hurt for longer causing him to really cry. Then after coming home I told it to my mother as a news and not because I want my teacher confronted.
I didn't know that my mother went angry about it so thankfully she went to my elementary teachers first and reported it to them, then my elementary teachers told my mother that they will personally go instead to my elementary school to let my sixth grade teacher know that mother went upset about what she had done, after that my teacher went easy on me or maybe to the entire class after that incident.
But in my own knowledge punishing the kids with hitting them with sticks or pulling up our sideburns is normal so we actually didn't hold grudge against our teacher because at home we also receive sticks from our mothers too when we commit errors. So for us our teachers in primary and elementary schools are like our mothers. But for our own mothers if someone would hit us it is seen as a bad thing, they will definitely be upset about it and confront who did it to us even our teachers.
By the time I went to high school the teachers are already different, they are more professional and I guess that it is not fitting anymore to hit a teenager at that time. For one thing it will cause some turmoil in the class and the then called students might hit back and possibly there had been a memo that corporal punishment was already banned if not the thing to do because if a student would err in the class, fighting physically or something like that they would have to go to the guidance councilor of the school. It is a bad news if you happen to land there for some reason because they will call your parent and then it is not good because your own parent will be the one punishing you, it will definitely end well for you.
Now even though I have to go through corporal punishment from my primary up to elementary school days, it was not my major complaint. I do think that it taught us to be more disciplined and try not to commit mistakes, making us to think twice before doing naughty things. Bit my major complaint was lack of quality education, I could have learned more or was able to hone my skills more if I was able to go to a better school. So it is just important to put our kids into a better school that can shape them into dealing with life after they graduated, having tools and knowledge so that they can be more competitive and contribute great things into society.
Corporal punishment is not fitting anymore to our society because of many opposing views. The are now guidance counsellor in schools ad they are quite effective enough in dealing with erring pupil or student.
