Sounds like it was a honeypot that someone was eyeballing for some time. My guess is that someone had access for a while and waited for the market to peak before making their move.
I hope this isn't the end of nicehash, they were a great service. I think my wallet even had a few bucks worth of bitcoin in it, but not enough to withdraw. Oh well, as the old saying goes: when there's no law, you have to police your sh!t or lose it
