I TESORI del fiume Tanaro // Tanaro river's TREASURES

Ieri siamo andati con @cryptowife sulle rive del fiume Tanaro. Per orientarvi: il Tanaro è un fiume (sesto per lunghezza in Italia) che nasce dalle Alpi Liguri e sfocia nel Po. Siamo andati perché @cryptowife cercava dei legnetti con cui fare lavori di artigianato. Ne abbiamo trovato soltanto uno, eppure non siamo tornati a casa a mani vuote. Abbiamo trovato un sacco di altri piccoli e grandi tesori.

Yesterday we went with @cryptowife on the banks of the Tanaro River. To help you get oriented: Tanaro is a river (sixth in length in Italy) that is born from the Ligurian Alps and flows into the Po (the longest Italian river). We went because @cryptowife was looking for washed up wood to craft some works. We only found one, and yet we did not go home empty-handed. We found a lot of other small and great treasures.

Mio padre mi racconta sempre che quando lui era bambino quelle sponde erano piene di bagnanti e le acque davano da mangiare a molti pescatori. Oggi queste sponde sono praticamente deserte. L'acqua si dice essere contaminata dagli scarichi della città di Alba. I ripetuti dragaggi hanno reso profondo il letto del fiume e la corrente forte rende pericoloso bagnarsi e ostacola la proliferazione dei pesci. Eppure, questa è stata una delle prime sorprese, la vita non è del tutto scomparsa. Chissà che anzi, non essendoci troppe persone in giro, negli ultimi anni qualcosa sia cambiato. Con nostro grande stupore, i ciottoli sulle sponde dove ci siamo rinfrescati i piedi erano pieni di bellissimi conchiglie.

My father always tells me that when he was a child those shores were full of bathers and the waters provided food for many fishermen. Today, these shores are basically deserted. Water is said to be contaminated by the drains of the city of Alba. Repeated dredges have deepened the bed of the river and strong current makes it dangerous to swim and hinder fish life. And yet - this was one of the first surprises - life has not completely disappeared. It may actually be the case that, in the absence of man, something has changed in recent years. With our great amazement, we found between the pebbles on which we have refreshed our feet a lot of shells (alive).

Seduti sulle rive del fiume abbiamo trovato ai nostri piedi moltissimo tufo e abbiamo iniziato a modellare questo fango, che in realtà è classificato come roccia, ma di fatto ricorda un'argilla di colore grigio. Se prima il mio pensiero era andato al pescatore @stea90 - chissà quale mega pesce sarebbe stato in grado di pescare in quelle acque - ora il pensiero è andato alle bellissime sculture di @paolobeneforti. L'anno scorso abbiamo incontrato in un mercatino dei ragazzi che modellano piccoli oggetti in tufo e poi li cuociono. Con questo in mente, abbiamo raccolto un po' di tufo per portarcelo a casa e provare a lavorarlo. Senza rinunciare a giocare un po' e modellare qualche animaletto.

Sitting on the banks of the river we found a lot of tuff at our feet and we started modeling this mud, which is actually classified as rock, but actually remembers a gray clay. My thoughts first went to @stea90 - wonder what tremendous fish would he be able to fish in these waters - then went to the awesome sculptures by @paolobeneforti. Last year we met in a market a couple that model, bake, and paint the tuff to create small objects. With this in mind, we have gathered some tuff to bring it home and try to work it. We didn't forget to play a little bit and create some cute little animals.

Riprendendo il cammino abbiamo incontrato un bel tronco che il fiume ha portato nell'ultima alluvione (lo scorso autunno). Nel bel mezzo della sponda, uno splendido girasole ci ha salutato con la sua gialla allegria. E poi, chissà che era già tempo di merenda, abbiamo trovato i pomodori. Sì! Pomodori nati da soli sui bordi del fiume. E tanti! Datterini, cuore di bue, pomodori rotondi - ne ho trovati ben tre varietà. Abbiamo mangiato qualche datterino ed erano dolcissimi! Non potevamo crederci che mentre noi ci affatichiamo a farli crescere nel loro orto, loro crescono indisturbati sulle sponde del fiume.

On the way back we found a nice log that the river brought in the last flood (last fall). In the middle of the shore, a gorgeous sunflower greeted us with his yellow cheer. A bee was visiting him. And then, it has should already been time for a snack, we found tomatoes. Yes! Tomatoes born alone on the edge of the river. And so many! Cherry, "ox heart", round tomatoes - I found three different varieties. We ate some cherry tomatoes and they were so sweet! We could not believe that while we are working hard to grow them in our garden, they grow undisturbed on the banks of the river.

Infine, tornando a casa, abbiamo incontrato due altri bei regali portati dal fiume nell'ultima alluvione. Si tratta di un grande contenitore in plastica che mi servirà alla Cryptofarm per trasportare la terra oppure come grande vaso per un albero. E poi abbiamo trovato un barile per il petrolio ancora in buone condizioni. Grazie ad una corda (mi porto sempre dietro corde - vi assicuro che tornano sempre utili) ho potuto legarlo e caricarlo in spalla. Il barile mi servirà adesso per il mio sistema di raccolta acque piovane e, il giorno che avrò una cisterna più grande, per costruire altre cose; @cryptowife vorrebbe usarlo per farne un forno all'aperto.

Eventually, on our way home, we found two other beautiful gifts brought by the river during the last flood. One is a large plastic container that I will use at Cryptofarm to carry some soil or as a large jar for a tree. And then we found a barrel for oil still in good condition. Thanks to a rope (I always carry ropes - they always turn out to be useful) I could tie it and carry on my shoulder. The barrel will serve me for my rainwater collection system and, once I'll have a bigger water tank, to build more things; @cryptowife would like to use it to make an outdoor oven.

In conclusione, siamo partiti con un'idea e siamo tornati a casa con un sacco di belle foto e bei ricordi. Non solo: abbiamo potuto mangiare dell'ottima verdura spontanea (i pomodorini), abbiamo raccolto del materiale per sperimentare nuovi lavori artigianali (il tufo) e soprattutto oggetti che mi saranno molto utili nella Cryptofarm. Una considerazione: é bello comprare il materiale che serve per i propri progetti, ma è anche molto bello trovarlo (in altre parole, riciclarlo). Si prova un po' la stessa gioia che si prova quando si trova un buon fungo in un bosco. Un regalo dal cielo. E, contemporaneamente, si ripulisce un pezzetto di mondo aiutando il grande fiume Tanaro a scorrere pulito, limpido e pieno di vita.

In conclusion, we left with an idea and came home with a lot of beautiful photos and nice memories. Not only: we have been able to eat good spontaneous vegetables (cherry tomatoes), we have collected material for experimenting with new crafts (the tuff) and above all objects that will be very useful in Cryptofarm. One consideration: It's great to buy the material you need for your projects, but it's also great to find it (in other words, recycle it). You feel a bit of the same joy you experience when you find a good mushroom in a forest. A gift from heaven. And, at the same time, you clean a piece of the world by helping the great Tanaro River to flow clean, transparent and full of life.
