Applique dolphin using felt #needleworkmonday

in #needleworkmonday8 years ago (edited)

Here's my entry for #needleworkmonday by @crosheille... Below I will show you the creation process.

I will skip the sketching stage… I traced my drawing onto greaseproof paper and pinned it onto a piece of greyish felt. I then cut around it : paper and felt at the same time. I have found this to be easier than cutting the pattern first or perhaps my scissors are not sharp enough.

I pinned the cut felt piece onto the blue felt background and started doing whipstitch around, but then I felt it looked too flat...

So I cut the piece below and stuffed it as the dolphin’s belly…. It doesn’t really show that much but it does have a slightly more 3-D shape.

I then just did a number of plain stitching rows around the dolphin. It is not neat because it’s supposed to be moving water and I used two colours. I also embroidered a small French knot for the eye.

I stuffed the ‘envelope’ with recycled wadding (from an old pillow) and sewed the edge.
I was asked to embroider the name on it, but it was already stuffed and sewn so it doesn’t look that neat. Also I couldn’t really mark the felt so it was completely improvised.

So @pennsif is now very pleased with his new wrist support because the desk is too hard.

It may not be perfect and the colours certainly lack subtlety, but I used what I had at hand and enjoyed photographing the process...

This is just so neat and creative @cryptocariad! I love that the stitching around the dolphin isn’t even but more sporadic because it does look like moving water! Thank you so much for sharing the process with us. It turned out sooo cute and I’m glad @pennsif loved it and finds it to be helpful! Nice original work ;)

I'm delighted with it. Very comfy for my wrist and blue is my favourite colour!

That’s so awesome!!!! 😃

Dont worry, it looks neat. Usually we think its not neat or perfect, cause we put so much work, love and concentration in it. We see every little mistake, but other people dont recognize them.

Thank you @creative-life. As you say we tend to concentrate on the problems and unfortunately that often stops us just trying... It is good to have a creative outlet !

I love it!!!! That is brilliant, great needle work and the dolphin is so cute!

Thank you @pumpkinsandcats. I appreciate the comments - very encouraging really.

Nice! I like that! Great job creating something that you needed and a great inspiration to become a dolphin! :)

Thank you @apanamamama. Thank you ... a long way to go to become a dolphin, but it's a worthwhile process.

Yes, it is such a long way to get to a dolphin! It's crazy!!! I'm still not even a minnow....

Happy #NeedleworkMonday, @cryptocariad! Your dolphin wrist rest is adorable and useful! This is truly a one-of-a-kind design and original work! Great job.

Thank you @crystalize. I enjoyed sharing the process ! and the positive comments are very encouraging for future projects.

Yaaay! Future projects sounds promising!

I think it looks great! Good job! 💙

I love dolphins! You did a fine job drawing and sewing this one. And so original making a wrist pillow with it.

Hello @anise. Thank you for the comments. I really like drawing and endeavour the draw something everyday to keep me going...

THIS IS SO ADORABLE!
I ‘eeked’ When I saw this. LOVE LOVE LOVE IT

This is so cute!!! And practical! I've been thinking of learning to hand embroider. Something to occupy me when I'm stuck stationary. I started a pair of house slippers but have not finished them yet

Hello @phedizzle. Thank you for your comment... I enjoyed doing the simple stitching - I didn't have embroidery thread handy ...
I'll be very interested to see those slippers when you finish them. As a project slippers would be small enough for me to tackle, but I'd be worried about making the soles non slippery. How are you making yours?

i took a pair of flipflops then punched holes around the outside. i watched about 10 youtube videos and picked the most complicated one then didnt follow the instructions haha. the part i "finshed" i have to redo because it doesn't fit. i ran out of thread, too. i was using that thick jeans thread and going over all the stitches a couple times.

I've seen a couple of those videos @phedizzle. Lots of patience involved ... I wonder whether the sole can take the tension of the walking...

in those videos without the flipflop soles, probably because they are sown to other fabric. maybe interfacing would make it stay together better and really thick fabric or reinforcing the stitches. on the flip flop sole kind, im not sure, tbh.
