No one’s going to be talking about blockchain in 20 years

Not because it won’t be important. It will just be embedded in everything we do, like the internet is built on TCP/IP.

Take a look at this blog post: Ten Things People Get Wrong About Blockchains And Cryptocurrency.

It’s a decent round-up that includes such predictable fallacies as ‘You have to buy a whole bitcoin!’, ‘There is a CEO of bitcoin!’ and ‘There is only one blockchain!’

We’d add a few of our own to the list. Like ‘It’s not worth anything because it’s just numbers!’, ‘Every time another blockchain is created bitcoin gets diluted!’ and ‘Only criminals use BTC!’

But one of the most interesting ideas here is the last point, which moves beyond the usual mistakes that n00bs make about bitcoin and crypto. It’s ‘People will be talking about blockchains in 20 years.’

The reality is that people aren’t going to care much about blockchain in ten or twenty years. The tech will be there, sure – or whatever iteration of consensus-based peer-to-peer networks exist by then – but we won’t have the same kinds of culture and conversations around it that we do now. It will be way too boringly normal for that.

‘When today’s five-year-olds are 25, they will think it was really quaint that people used to go to special conferences and meetups to talk about blockchains, in the same way that we now marvel that a print magazine called ‘Internet’ was on sale in newsagents for the ten years between 1994 and 2004.’

Probably, the only people who get together to talk about blockchain will be the kind of guys that queue for days ahead of the launch of the next iPhone or get into heated debates on forums about the finer points of Linux.

Be warned: in 20 years time, we will be the equivalent of Trainspotters.
