i am thinking of getting one too. . the price sure has come down in recent years

yes there are some decent ones fairly cheap

Hey there. I currently have a 3D printer at home, China-bought. So far it is running quite reliable - I posted about the quality as compared to what I have used in school before, such as Makerbot, though some more calibration may be needed for finer details. I used 3Dison in school as well - all these make use of fused-deposition modelling (FDM) methods.

Well, you might want to consider what kind of objects you want to print most of the time? If you are going with small-scale models you may not need something big, unless you want to print a lot at a time. Likewise, if you plan to print something that is bigger most of the time, you might want to get 3D printers with a larger capacity (or else you will find that you will need to split your design into multiple parts).

Nozzle diameter would also be something to consider as well. The smaller the nozzle, the finer the detail will be. So if you are planning to print something that has walls of 0.2mm thickness, you will probably not want to get a 3D-printer with a 0.4mm nozzle. Of course, some 3D printers allow you the capacity to change your modules, or you could buy an open-source one as well. :)

Well, then there are many with fancy functions, such as multiple manufacturing tools (I saw one that could change its modules so you can have CNC machining or laser cutting), or multiple extruders for multiple colours. So that's another consideration.

Well, that is what I can think off my head now!
