New and Unusual Tree

This a tree I noticed near my friends' house. I took a photo first because the bark looked very interesting to me.

Almost like zebra stripes. Always vertical.

The branches were full of little wrapped gifts.

I should have grabbed some seeds to find out if I could germinate one at home.
