The Totality: An Excuse to Visit Idaho

in #eclipse7 years ago

19934.jpeg Total Eclipse of the Sun, photo by my husband, August 21, 2017. Somewhere in Idaho......

0820171354a_HDR.jpg We passed the Potato Museum, also Atomic City, but we didn't stop. We had a camp to pitch!

Our journey took us through endless farmland and desert flats. But somehow, my husband had cyberscouted a drop of emerald green for us to camp in for the celestial event.

0820171737_HDR.jpg This tiny track led us to our gorgeous viewing station.

0820171736_HDR~2.jpg Glamping in a meadow full of purple asters

0820171741_HDR~2.jpg ...with an elk trail established right behind our tent. Were elk behind the mystery of the licked-clean chili beans left on a plate the first night?

0820171756f_HDR~2.jpg The meadow was abuzz with plentiful insects, including this oddity.

0821171034a_HDR.jpg Even at near-totality, my phone couldn't handle shooting into the eclipse...

0821171033_HDR.jpg ...but I did manage to capture this bizarre reflection of my own eye when trying to shoot through my safety glasses.

The total solar eclipse was a very weird experience to witness. I felt discombobulated, and a little bit queasy. The character of the light was so unnatural, and the moment when we could gaze at the corona with our bare eyes was indescribable.

I can imagine how the ancients felt about such a wondrous spectacle. It felt portentious.

I celebrated by tormenting my son with quips about the "waxing gibbous sun", which he vigorously denies being a thing. Apparently, gibbousness only applies to the moon. Who knew?

Sort:

What a trip to see a total eclipse of the Sun in person!!
"waxing gibbous sun" that is going to be a thing now ;-)

Another absurd question I had fun demanding:

How could the moon cover the whole sun when it wasn't even full???

Cue the filial side-eye!
