One Year on Steem

in #steem6 years ago

Today, exactly one year ago, I signed up for Steem(it) and joined the Steem blockchain. Originally I wanted to write a long retrospective about my experiences on the Steem blockchain, however my time is very limited right now (why can best described in two simple words: master thesis), so I'm just writing a short post for this anniversary.

I joined last year, shortly before the whole crypto market went from one record high to another. In a fast-paced sphere like crypto a lot can change within one year, and it did: instead of the record highs from last year, the whole market was just going down (while writing this Steem for example lost 94.7%, compared to its all-time high from beginning of January). 2018 was a rather bad year for crypto, I'm not sure if we already reached the bottom, but I don't think that the market will go anywhere near the records soon (if so, it would be a real Christmas miracle :)

Anyway, with all these losses a lot of people turned their backs on crypto and only the true believers are left. To be honest, I don't think that this is the worst thing that can happen, instead of people trying to get-rich-quick, only people who see the greater potential of crypto are left. People who think at a larger time scale, people who are able to see beyond current numbers and people who are able to carry on, even when times are difficult.

I for one will carry on and continue being active on Steem (well, unless a new blockchain based social media platform, that is basically a better version of Steem comes along, then I might switch to this one) and hopefully in a year from now, I will have more time to look back and write about my experiences on Steem.

it's been about one year for me now too 😎
people tend to forget markets turn upside down all the time. and very quickly! 😆

Cool 😀

Let's hope that this turn comes rather sooner than later. But anyway, a purge like this has the nice effect of weeding out bad ideas in the sphere and usually those who carry on through the bad times have an huge advantage when the market turns around.

oh yes. i like how you're calling it the purge. today ned announced he laid off nearly 70% of his employees. personally i think steemit inc itself might be one of those bad ideas, and i hope witnesses or basically anybody would step up and set better examples. (i feel bad for the individuals but steemit inc needs to be purged..)

btw i love the movie!

I haven't seen the movie, but purge just sounds better and more accurate than "cleaning" 😅

About Steemit Inc: if you are in a fast paced sphere like crypto, something like this can unfortunately happen faster than you'd think, 70% lay offs is indeed a lot, especially for such a young company. If course it would be great if the community stepps up and slowly takes over development, but I think that this will be a very long process, it is ever going to happen (as far as I understood block.one wants to do something similar for EOS, but there it also takes time until the community takes over development).

Yea itll take time for sure. But if people are forced to come up with an alternative because ned suddenly gives up one day, i think it could be way quicker 😏
In any case when someone is trying to remove his own power/influence itll be nearly impossible not unless theres a big outside force.
Who knows. But itll be interesting to watch.
