Getting Paid for Social Media

The latest cryptocurrency trend of linking crypto to social media is really interesting. It allows people to get paid for their interactions with social media and for their attention. Something like this wasn’t really possible before cryptocurrency came along, certainly not to the scope that’s possible now. Best of all, it allows people to get involved with cryptocurrency without having to actually spend anything or get into the expensive world of crypto mining.

There is some debate centered around this issue however. Some in these communities think it’s fine to focus on the monetary aspects of a crypto social platform while others think that such a focus lessens the platform or the quality of the posts, and that people should just treat such platforms like any other social network and not worry about the cryptocurrency aspects.

While I can certainly understand and appreciate where these people and views are coming from, I think not only is it fine to emphasize the monetary aspects of these platforms, but it’s good.

First, many of these platforms emphasize it themselves. For instance on Steemit, a popular crypto social network based on the Steem blockchain, when you go to the main page of the website they declare in big bold letters “Your voice is worth something”, and go on to describe in a blurb how you can get paid by using their platform. The website is specifically using the possibility of earning crypto as a way to attract new users.

In regards to the crypto aspect reducing the quality of posts, if implemented carefully, it can actually increase the quality of posts by creating incentive to post good material to get people to read it, and there can be incentive for people to interact with those posts so they can get rewarded from that too.

While it’s true that such a system has to be thought about carefully so that it works in a balanced way that’s beneficial to everyone and achieves the goals of the platform, making crypto a central part of a network can greatly increase the quality of its content.

So while I understand those that say you shouldn’t focus on the crypto, I think focusing on the crypto is a great way to help the network be a success.
