Day 3: Identifying with Villains / Antiheroes

Hi again everyone!

Today I'll be talking a bit about a strange thing I get whenever I watch TV.

In shows like Phineas and Ferb or Lazytown (not that I watch either any more), I always find myself identifying with the villains. Honestly, I never really cared for either show all that much, apart from the scenes involving Dr. Doofenshmirtz or Robbie Rotten.
Similarly, in the Grinch that stole Christmas, the Grinch was always my favourite character. I suppose it's different, as he is the star of the movie, but it's the same character type really.

Another place I get this is in the Mario franchise. I've always been a huge fan of Wario, and my brother is a fan of Waluigi (hence the above drawing). This works out well for games like Mario Kart, or Mario Party- we get matching characters, and never fight over who's who. It helps that as kids, my brother was tall and thin, and I was shorter and chubbier. I would also be lying if I said I didn't have a fridge in my room containing nothing but 6 heads of garlic

I guess the thing I really find weird is that I'm not at all like Wario- he's all about greed, whereas I don't care much for money, as long as I'm not struggling to get by. On the other hand, we both love garlic.... Could that maybe be a deeper connection than I thought?

Anyways, as always, thanks for reading, and I hope you enjoyed it!

Garlic is the deepest connection, Cory. Hold onto it... forever... o.o

A villain I personally identify with is Dr. Horrible from Dr. Horrible's Sing Along Blog. Damn Captain Hammer, the scum!

The villain-protagonist or humanized villains are always my favourite villains as well. I've never really enjoyed villains who's motives are pure evil. Wanting to succeed, greed, jealousy, these are all relatable feelings we all have to some extent, their pretty standard human traits a lot of people struggle with on the daily. We might not all be greedy, but we can all agree that greed is something that we do see others experience in our day-to-day lives, unlike genuine evilness. I relate more with a villain who wants to succeed at being evil for the sake of success more than I can relate to one who dehumanizes others in a genuinely evil/sadistic way. To me, that is the difference between The Grinch/Dr. Doofenshmirtz/Robbie Rotten/Dr. Horrible compared to genuinely 'evil'/sadistic villains.
