The Meaning of Life
Good Evening, everyone. ^,,,^ We have an existential ramble tonight! So, strap in, because shit is about to get real.
I am a frequent passenger of Lyft. It helps me get to places like the grocery store, laundromat and work. It's very useful. With every single driver I have, I always ask the same question: What's the meaning of life?
Why drivers, you ask? Who else would have a more thoughtful answer? These people watch hundred of miles go by in the windshield. They watch people and gather a lot of insight to the inner-workings of human behavior and life overall. And most of this occurs in a rear view. In a way, they are more dependable and closer to us than some of the people we live with. It's all very fascinating, really..
The drivers themselves ranged from all walks of life. Soccer Moms, Middle Eastern Gentlemen, College Students, Jazz Musicians, etc.
I felt this was a perfectly unbiased way to hopefully come up with something interesting to consider in bed or in the shower. I hope I can achieve the same for you.
Most of them would begin talking about Heaven and Hell, ..Which, one would think, is a different subject entirely. That's more a matter of good and bad, and the afterlife. My only experience with the afterlife is a near death experience I had a few years back. I'd decided to pair a few downers with some booze and ended up going into Cardiac Arrest. I don't remember it happening. But I did remember experiencing nothingness. I did remember being isolated, but not being alone. And most of all, I remember not caring.
No tunnel of night when you die too soon.
The only other experience I have with the afterlife are my many encounters with the paranormal. But I think that's perhaps a ramble for another time. Ze Comic Book Version is...there are ghosts. So there appears to be an afterlife of some kind. But that's when we stop having a conversation about the meaning of life and start talking about what comes after this bad sitcom.
Let's stay on topic!
The more relevant answers were as follows:
47% claimed there was no meaning. That we were simply here to live, procreate if the opportunity presents, eat, shit, sleep and expire. 26% claimed it was to be a good person and leave the place better than you found it. 20% claimed they didn't know. And lastly, a whopping 7% made a claim I think is more likely.
It's subjective. Most of us have nothing to contribute to this world, as the 47% says. I believe some of us do have a sort of predestined amount of duties, responsibilities and purposes to fulfill before going up to that big country club in the sky or that night shift at Mcdonald's that never ends downstairs. So, how many of us are the special snowflakes worth a shit? Afraid I'm unsure...one would hope at least a third of us. I have to confess most of my peers, the people my age, appear to have a lack of light in their eyes. It's as if none of this ever occurs to them.
I used to find the idea that that everything is meaningless quite comforting. It was only a few years ago that I began to want there to be something, to care, to wonder. Nihilism can only get you so far. I like to think that we aren't simply the result of thousands of years of evolution. That all of this madness isn't simply what happens when bags of meat with eyes are allowed to prosper for far too long..
I suppose our society keeps most of the people so very distracted with things that don't matter, that it's become a less necessary thing to think about.
I continue to carry on with these tests. I ask as many people as I can. Why keep my findings isolated to drivers?
This includes my coworkers and various people I interact with in my busy downtown area.
Most people don't know the answer.
What do you think? Do leave a comment giving me your best guess.
Talk to me about this. Because the people around me won't.
I think this is something I'm sure we've all contemplated at one time or another. I think if we took more time to regularly talk about this, that we may come to some useful conclusions. Especially on the topic of lightening the fuck up.
Good night, guys ^,,,^

The most honest answer I can give you is: I don't know.
Depressing, but honest.
I will keep looking.
I enjoy the fact that you produced a graph based on these responses.
I'm of the opinion that our happening to be here, and indeed, being alive is just a cosmic, and probably comical rounding error based on the laws of the universe.
The meaning to me is to learn, explore, and leave some sort of mark.
Be that through great literary works like Poe; or the Pyramids like the pharaohs.
Also, helps if you aren't a complete degenerate in your behavior to others.
Life, as a chemical and biological function, is meaningless, the fact that we ask the question gives it meaning.

I believe the true deepest meaning of life is to just not take for granted that you are alive. Take advantage of each day and try and make the best of every hour that you have. Nobody knows the truth about the afterlife, but the truth to reality is that most people take their life, their love and their relationships for granted until it is too late.
