Toccata pour grand orgue in D minor - Gaston Bélier | Secrets of Organ Playing Contest Week 46
This is my entry for the Secrets of Organ Playing Contest Week 46.
I'm playing Toccata in D minor by Gaston Bélier (1863 – 1938). Bélier was a French organist and composer and was the student of the famous Eugène Gigout. Bélier most likely composed many other works, but he is only really known today for the Toccata. This piece is his only published work on IMSLP.
Studying at the Conservatoire de Paris and being the titular organist at Saint-Maclou of Pontoise Cathedral, this puts Bélier in French Romantic school of organ music. His contemporaries were César Franck, Charles-Marie Widor, Félix-Alexandre Guilmant and Louis Vierne. French romantic repertoire breathed life into the French symphonic 'organ sound'. It became synonymous with Cavaillé-Coll instruments and the reverberant churches they were housed in.
In my recording, you will be hearing it on a French-Canadian instrument (in Australia) with less reverberation than its Cavaillé-Coll friends in France. I do hope you enjoy my rendition!
