A peak within defines, not the past, rather the future [Athens, Greece]
The city is thriving, at least it seems. The past is the past, simply let it be. Financial instability in the face of a governmental meltdown. This does not define the country today. Not looking back, but only ahead, Greece is making a comprehensive move toward economic stability using a key source: tourism.
The touristy areas of Greece like Santorini and Mykonos are using this key source to their full advantage. A one night stay, and you are looking at 200 bucks, just for accommodations. Hundreds of thousands of traveling tourists make their way throughout the Cyclades each year, bringing back any lost hope from the humanitarian crisis years before.
Athens, although still rundown in many areas of the city, has made serious steps toward recovery as well. But Athens will always be Athens; a place of historical significance and a funkiness vibe which boasts traditional flavors. An all encompassing description of the city itself, in my opinion, would be something along the lines of:
A completely different breed, defying the general rules of Darwinian natural selection.

One for my bucket list for sure! I love the history and culture and hope to go one day. Coming from another island in deep financial crisis, I can only imagine how difficult it is for the people trying to improve their lives.
