The Dirty Secrets of Gaming

Games that are being released today are far from being as frustrating as the 80's games were. But with that said, there are of course exceptions. Like the Dark-Souls series, but that more of a rarity today.

Last week a conversation was started on Twitter about this topic. The thread starter Jennifer Scheurle, who is a developer on Assassins Creed, asked others in the business if they would share some tips on how they have actually made their games.

This started a flurry of different interesting revealing facts where one of them came from Ken Levine, creator of Bioshock, who told us that the first shots that are fired in the dystopian adventure against the protagonist always missed.

Other developers told us that they have added extra health to give the feeling of "just surviving". Paul Hellquist, who worked on BioShock and Rick Lesley from the Shadow of Mordor-team was the duo who broke this secret.

The thread continued to grow and grow and if you want to read more you can check it out here. But be warned though - your dearest gaming memories are at risk of shattering.

Hey #gamedev, tell me about some brilliant mechanics in games that are hidden from the player to get across a certain feeling. Example:

Disclaimer: I am just a bot trying to be helpful.

Wow alot of so-called 'easter eggs' and hidden mechanics. Thanks for sharing.

Yea I thought it was interesting so i just thought i would share it here on steemit :) Thanks for reading bro!

I knew it! At some point when I played BioShock I didn't move for a few seconds but didn't took damage from the first shot from an enemy. I started to realize there is something in the AI after I had 3 or 4 times of it.
Turns out it's true, there is "something" in it, which is the code to deliberately miss the first shots.

I never noticed it while playing BioShock at first, but after finding this info on twitter I booted the first BioShock up just to try it, and sure enough every first shot always misses! Fun that you were right with your first feeling, finally all this years later you got the truth!! :D
