Bypassing the Great Firewall of China

Avoiding Censorship in an Oppressed Nation

It's no easy matter avoiding the authoritative control that the Chinese government has over internet access to those who are located in mainland China.

I did it! Then again, I was a Foreign Expert and they probably knew I was sneaking past that digital wall and are possibly more aware of it now since I am saying how I managed to escape their wily defenses.

The first step is to realize that the PRoC is actively monitoring VPNs. However, they cannot actively monitor all IP addresses or block them all (well, they could ... hopefully this post won't have unforeseen repercussions). All it takes is one IP address or a server that you can communicate to with the permission of the Hacking Team at the Great Firewall, and then you can use pre-existing features in the ssh protocol to essentially have unrestricted access to the internet.

Being technologically savvy does have its perks (especially when trying to combat the censorship of the PRoC).

The process is simple and the idea should be capable of being applied to Windows users by going through PuTTy, for instance.

Dynamic Port Forwarding via SSH

Nothing could be easier than logging onto any old server you have access to (I ended up proxying through matthewniemerg.com) via ssh and using dynamic port forwarding. For example, I would type the command

ssh -D 9999 [email protected]

enter the password to access the server and then change my browser settings and system preferences to allow for proxy servers. You then set the IP address to be your local machine, i.e. 127.0.0.1, and the port number the port specified in the dynamic port forwarding flag, i.e. 9999.

And voila. You are now connected to basic web browsing (http and https) through a proxy. All content is not fully routed as it is with a VPN, but for avoiding the hassle of outright censorship and basic access to content, this works rather well.

Anyway, this was how I managed to surf the internet whilst in China for 5 months. My favorite place to find proxy servers is premsocks.com. There are other configurations you can do, too, without dynamic port forwarding.

Renting a cheap server and doing this was by far more effective than anything else I tried.

I'm sure there are ways of setting up a private VPN in a similar way, once you have a server that is outside the Firewall and communicating inside of it. Point is that nearly all known VPNs are monitored...

In My Defense

What'd they expect me to do? I couldn't even access gmail in the dorms that I was staying at ... sheesh.

Sort:

In actuality, China's telecommunication industry setup is a monopoly of 3 state-controlled entities, and, from what I understand, people pay the state to allow access through to China. Very similar to how Net Neutrality may go stateside ...

Or, I could be wrong, on all counts. Again.

This china censoring has to end imagine what it would do to the world if all Chinese can access the internet like us! wow would it be good for all economy or should Chinese be left in the dark, not counting the users that know of technology of course. But they don't even compare to the non-webies.

You can't even access gmail from there??? Jeez!!! 0o
BTW, there is something alike is going on in Russia currently.
People from there are complaining that they don't have normal access to many btc exchanges, since these are in nation wide black lists...

many btc exchanges
Or LocalBitcoins only? I think, Russians can still access BTC-e, Exmo etc.

Starting January 22, 2016, access to btc-e.com is blocked in Russia. They've made a mirror with another address: http://btc-e.nz (it was in their news, but only in Russian: https://btc-e.com/news/227 - switch flag, if you want to see it). They've posted that they 'are working with this problem.' Though, I don't know if they succedeed. There are (were?) problems with bitstamp and other exchanges. They have some special state body dealing with the sites. Access to ANY site can be blocked to the whole Russia by a decision of ANY court, including some really small towns in Russia. I've heard that they wanted to block facebook and such. Russians would tell you more about the matter ;D

Wow! The great firewall of China is the best tourist spot in the place. I wish I could go there :)

Great firewall of China is NOT a tourist spot. Great wall of China is. But, this post talks about ways to bypass Great firewall of China, an internet filter. People who has awarded u $5.57 are the one ruining Steemit.

Bot the Great firewall if China is very popular here in the Philippines. Sorry, I thought it is the best tourist spot in China. Nice to know about it <3

China and work can only be described as a real hassle. Psiphon worked for me, and it's easier than setting up an ubfuscated bridge. It's only for windows and android though.

Im pretty sure you can tor through the wall if you want to. If you already have tor browser on your puter its probably a lil easier than finding a proxy/VPN

False, or I believe that to be the case. Tor is actively monitored by the PRoC and its army of hackers and attempts to access it (even if initially successful) are constantly thwarted.

I couldn't say as I couldn't access anything ... but I did successfully proxy and then use TOR while in China. Just because I'm a rebel.

wow, holy shit. did not know that... i guess the people I know that use it there must vpn->tor or proxy->tor....

It's pretty bad in that respect.

It is extremely frustrating in Shanghai to use google, facebook and twitter. Even with VPN, it is very slowwww..... This is actually the top complaint of many expats and their wives living in China.. btw

This is why there soon won't be many expats left.

Yes.. Shanghai seems more like a transitional city for most expats. I have been in Shanghai for a year now. Many times, i joined gatherings here and there, made a few new friends and poof she announced that she s leaving the next month. And then the cycle repeats.

The great wall of china is still as beautiful since the last time I visited it... in my dreams :)

Yet again ... the physical wall is not the point of this post ... sigh

Yes sir, i just wanted to express my admiration to the great wall.

VPN is the most popular choice.

All the VPNs I tried were blocked.

Including any attempt to search for VPNs, too.

I have developed games for the Chinese market and there are some very sketchy parts and certain people to keep in the loop...

the great china wall is a really great architecture for mankind :D

not what this post was really about ...

hah " I see a photo, must comment on the photo alone make monies!"

And he made 0.58 SBD. WoW!

May be people should check Steemit Wonder Comments, to know how some single liners made 100+ SBD.

Yes, it has protected the China from fires since the day it was built!
