We all have something that gives us a reason to worry sometimes. Things like seeing others succeeding in life while you struggle, your endeavours failing despite your best efforts, and again others having exceptional skills that make them do better than you. These and many other reason can make you become worried a times.

In my experience as a teacher, I've seen pupils who believe they are less clever than their peers, making it harder for them to perform at the same level with them. I faced this difficulty when I transferred from a public school to a private school where the majority of the students were far more gifted than I was. Coping with academic work and the student was a difficulty for me. I was on the verge of dropping out because I thought the school's standards were too high for me. With time, I was able to work on my inadequacy and moved on.

Three years ago, I taught a student who was in a similar position. She was always quiet and shy in class and avoided social interactions outside of class. I learned from her that she felt undeserving of being in the school, being placed in one of Ghana's best schools wasn't her desire. She believed she was a dunce compared to the rest of her mates.

The only way I could be of assistance was by becoming her best friend. She accepted me as a friend and I explained to her why she deserved the best in life as well, regardless of her background. I'm glad that the inspiration and support I provided her revitalised her, restored her self confidence and gave her new hope She is now writing her WACCSE exams and will finish her secondary education soon.

Many individuals are struggling, and until we get to know them better, we'll never know what they're going through. Suicidal people believe there is no hope and no one to turn for help. We can help save many lives by getting closer to people, identifying with them, and being of service to them in any way we can. I'm glad I was able to make a difference in Adubea's life, and I hope to see her graduate soon. Let's do everything we can to help the weak, the defenceless and less privilege.
