Parlee farm – blueberry picking

Today the weather was very nice at mid 70’s and it was sunny. A very nice day for outdoor activity. As my mom will return to China in couple weeks, we decided to bring her to Parlee farm for blueberry picking.

In China, blueberry is very expensive, as it’s not very popular. My mom had never seen blueberry bushes in person before. Nor did I.

I went to this Parlee farm last year for strawberry picking, and had never done blueberry picking before. Not like strawberry picking, you had to wait for the trailer, the blueberry bushes are right next to the store. What you need to do is to take a bracket, and walk to the field.

As you can imagine, the field is huge. They have over 10 acres of blueberry bushes. The whole area is covered by fish net to prevent the birds and animals from eating the blueberries. In New England, there are many birds and small animals like rabbit, squirrels, etc. Without the net, I bet most of the blueberries will be taken before human can enjoy it.

The bushes are not very all, it’s so convenient to pick, esp when the blueberries are ripe, they are so easy to come off. This farm has over 10 varieties ripening over the course of the season. As the land is so big, not all rows of bushes are ripe and ready for picking. We can only pick the rows with an orange sign on it. Everybody can’t help putting the blueberries into their mouth, including us. Tasting is one of the fun at fruit picking. You can always taste them before you decide how many you want to get. It will not go wrong.

We brought home with over 2 pounds of blueberries. Blueberries should not be washed until you are ready to use them as otherwise they can easily go back. Without washing, they have a long shelf like of almost two weeks in refrigerator.

It’s really fun to pick-your-own. We really had good time, my mom was so happy and took quite some photos as she said she wanted her friends in China to see them too.
