As far back as Maxwell's time, it has been known that light travels in vacuum at approximately 300 thousand kilometers per second, but it was not known that this speed was the maximum speed limit in our observable universe and was due to the reign of Newtonian physics. However after the inception of Einstein's theory special relativity which now has solid experimental grounds, it is now known that nothing can move faster than the vacuum speed of light.
Recently a group of physicists have managed to experimentally make photons exceed this maximum speed limit but it doesn't seem to be what it seems to be, as the theory of special relativity has not been violated, sorry to break your heart.
