John the Baptist knew his purpose and role in history. Filled with the Holy Ghost in his mother's womb, he was indeed a great prophet. Jesus said of him, that he was without equal among those born of women. Then, Jesus declared that the least one in the kingdom of heaven was greater than John. John was great because he dedicated himself to prepare the way for the Christ in fulfillment of scripture. He not only told them who Jesus was, but John told them that as Jesus increased, he (John) would decrease. John's true greatness was demonstrated through his complete surrender of his will and life to fulfill his purpose as assigned by God.
