Steemit: The Game!!

in #steemit10 years ago

I would consider right now the site is very much a game. It's become something like going to a race track every day, with the exact same horses racing each other.... every day. I just need to show up and bet on the same horses.

BORED

Really, what is the goal here? I have heard it said original content... on the trending page about half of it is crypto related, posting work of others and of course a handful of steemit content.
FOUR POSTS A DAY?!?!?
Come on, any quality work can't be spit out that fast, which is probably why we have as many people as we do looking to post for others. Why is it anything more than a single post a day starts increasing the curation rewards. In my opinion, it drags the platform down in every sense, except that it keeps me coming back to look at my feed for posts from authors who always wind up with the same voting results, regardless of what is being posted.

Participate In What Exactly?

Earn through participation. Is that the vote-swapping mentality we have fostered or participating in endless debates on what is perceived to be the power distribution? Curation is nothing a new account can really participate in, even with the changes 8x nothing is still very miniscule. Vote for their comments on my post, what is the encouragement for that? I have wasted a vote I can save for the next "safe bet" and maximize myself.

On a new user level, there is absolutely nothing the majority can do to earn participation rewards other than posting.

Look. I am done typing something that I don't feel will get seen regardless. I want to assure you, I love what the site can be, I am just so tired of seeing the wrong issues talked about and discussed endlessly. I have been here 7 weeks, and I would think a review of my account would show more activity than a good portion of the users..... I need to change that. I am backing off. I won't power down my account because I am grateful for what it brought out of me in terms of creativity. I will highly reduce my participation however as the direction I see us going has nothing to do with that anymore.

Here is a picture I am told all posts need to include

SOURCE

I will be jumping on still from time to time, but I am done with the game as it's being played. I will continue to support people I have enjoyed supporting and trying to encourage new users in hopes that they stick it out long enough for something to change. Until those changes happen though I am really just feeling done with what we have today.

Just like we have voting power. We should also have posting power.
That would limit the amount of people just posting to get a quick buck and would make them focus more on one or two post. The quality of the post would also greatly increase since a lot of people would be posting more quality content out.

I would love to see something that promotes true participation. Reddit is the best model I have for this site, and although I was never a member I often wound up on their site searching answers to a question I had.
Almost never was the answer in the authors post, but in the comments. Quality would be a nice improvement, but interaction would be an amazing one.
Just as a thought. Imagine if the author by default only got 25% of the post reward, and the rest was doled out by comments that contribute to, disprove or are relevant to the article. The author could earn an additional amount beyond the 25% standard by interacting in the same section.

oh just a thought on something that promotes participation, perhaps if commenting on posts powered up a supervote, the supervote could turn say a 1cent vote to a $1 vote and increase the curation rewards for the minnow, as you get more steem power the boost you get from a supervote decreases so the by the time we get to whales it has been phased out thus evening out voting power a little at the same time.

Playing devils advocate a moment. Is it any comment that begins to charge a supervote, "Hey nice post" included? I am fumbling through ideas trying to get a meaningful response to @stellabella's question "how would you change it if it were yours to change?". I am thinking along similar lines as you, just trying to puzzle through a way that rewards participation in a way a bot can't easily relicate.

hmm that's a good point, perhaps it would be better if upvotes on your comments charged your supervote (obviously your own vote couldn't count) or if only comments over a set length did.
edit** on second thoughts how about if after payout the author could choose a set amount of commentors to supercharge

I kinda long-formed my thoughts here if you have time. you got me thinking :)

I can see what you are saying but as a new user I am still enjoying reading posts. I can't yet spot the winners so curating is a bit hit and miss for me!

I hope you don't lose that... Thank you for reading the posts. It means more to some of us than the rewards we get for posting them. :)

Many times all you need to know for a post to be successful is by looking at their reputation. That little number in a bubble next to your username is everything here on steemit.
@masteryoda does a post daily on who the most profitable accounts here on steemit are.

Good read.
While the idea of a social site on the blockchain is very exiting.
From what it looks like, Dan feels that everything should be decentralized and the community should figure out whats good and whats not and heal accordingly. All while not focusing on how rigged this game is for those sitting at the top. While minnows, (who are the ones that mainly would carry this site to be successful) are to fend for themselves.

While some in the community have tried to help out the little guy. Most are here for profits and that is the sad true.

Good overview @clevecross
Something has to change if this site doesn't want to lose the few people it has.

I don't have a huge problem with them sitting back and managing that end of the site. It's just mainly their focus and not one that new people would even care about.
Please look at my last post, I imagine a lot of people would be quick to understand things take time when there's a visible recognition of the author and their accomplishments.
A new user could look at a top trending post and see "Oh this person joined three months ago, they have 300 followers, they've been writing for this period of time". It lends perspective and is more than just a rep and a wallet balance.
If they have accomplishments they can start to build up (again please look up last post Badges and Bounties) it gives them something to work towards. Even including badges for authors to readers for great comments, letting them feel acknowledged and rewarded.

Just read it, Great post!!

Here's how I would solve this problem.

Keep posting limited to a single channel, say "space." If you become a whale in "space" it's ONLY in "space." If you go to another channel you need to build from the ground up.

That's the best way to get users to start making COMMUNITIES, which are needed to ensure that a site stays alive. It's the best part of Reddit. The shitty part of Reddit is how authoritarian the mods get (I am one, on Futurology - the 'Pigs' moved in a long time ago.) The way to get around that is to not allow post-deletion, but perhaps instead have an "off-topic" tag. Also, separating rule-creators from rule-enforcers is a MUST.

Steemit is an awesome concept, but it's still got a lot of flaws. Maybe I'll do a post on it soon.

Absolutely. Not having posts able to be deleted is a huge thing here. I am not sure about the "ONLY in space" part.... but if you wouldn't mind taking a peek at my last post (plays in line with your ideas)
https://steemit.com/steemit/@clevecross/bounties-for-badges
So using a same model, say I get a high rank in space, make my votes a little more powerful for that tag.
I have also thought about having a single tag for a post, I agree some should have multiple tags.... but make part of the interaction (and curation rewards) part of deciding and reaching consensus on exactly what those other tags should be

Your comment on my blog brings me to your blog. Well. After 3 months here, steemit has amidst the negativity, quarrels, scams, etc, there are still real interesting people out there. So for me, i come here everyday and just try to bring some positive value here and there, be it, contests, jokes, learning from one and another. :-) May be a nasty game for some but least it was fun for me

Yeah, It was a hasty point put out due to some frustration. It mostly comes from getting caught up in things I shouldn't worry about. Curation..... people smarter than me can figure it out. I will work on changing what I feel are key issues. Hopefully my whinerantfest isn't the only one you saw lol
