Witness clayop Report: Summary of 2018 and New Year Plans (한글도 있습니다)

The last year was a real winter to crypto-communities, especially Steem. We have experienced significant price drops, user exits, broken pegs, and shrink of our vividity. However, as a witness as well as a mere user, I still believe Steem has the strong community-base and a great potential. With this belief, I have done many things in the last year, and will do other things in this year. First, Let me tell you a brief summary of 2018 below,

2018-1. Support of dApps

I have been a great supporter of dApps, not just by Steem Power but also by meeting and advising dApp teams. I am supporting Steemhunt, Tasteem, Tripsteem, DCLICK, nTOPAZ, and Kpopsteem now (with about 400k~500k SP). I am also contacting more dApp teams, one of which is operating top 10 Korean community with over twenty million users. These Steem-based apps are our invaluable assets that diversify and expand our user-base, especially when SMTs are live. I will keep focusing on them in 2019.

2018-2. Presentations and Discussions

As a blockchain and token economy expert, I have participated in many conferences and summits (both business and academic) and educate people about what Steem is and why Steem is important and will be more important. Also, two discussions in national parliament were great experience and opportunity for me to meet "gate-keepers". Wherever I present, Steem is there too.

2018-3. Kakao Ventures!

It is a quite personal but I think that I need to tell you about this good news. I began to participate Kakao Ventures (yes, the biggest Korean IT group Kakao) as a blockchain part advisory. The experiences with the company helped me a lot to understand business world. I believe this gain will turn another gain for Steemians. Hopefully, Steem-based dApps will become unicorns of Kakao :) (Here is the article)

These are my works in 2018. Now it is the time for 2019 plans.

2019-1. Focus on dApps and SMTs

With the SMT launch, dApps may want to switch their business and token economy models to SMT-based ones. This is not an easy task. Fortunately, I have some experiences to help dApps to go forward and make it. Also, I will put my effort to educating SMT system to normal users as well as other professionals.

2019-2. User Influx, Verification, and Basic Income

One of the biggest problem of Steem now is a lack of users. If there are many more users, there will be more dApps and higher STEEM price, then again more users. This is obviously a virtuous circle, however, is also the chicken-and-egg problem. I have been attempting to resolve this problem by basic income with user verification. That is, any real person can get reward because any participation generates some degree of the network effect. I already have talked about the specific design with a Kr community developer and soon will share the idea with the Steem community.

2019-3. Economy Model Improvement Suggestion

Steem is a great experiment but has some economic design issues that degrade Steem value. For post-SMT, I am going to suggest the ways of economic improvement and attempt to make positive changes.

작년 한 해는 매우 어려운 시기였습니다. 스팀 가격도 많이 떨어지고, 사용자도 줄고, 스팀달러까지 1달러 밑으로 가서 전반적인 활기가 떨어졌던 시기였죠. 그래도 저는 여전히 스팀이 훌륭한 커뮤니티를 가지고 있고, 이것이 추후에 강력한 성장동력이 될 것이라 믿고 있습니다. 스팀 성장에 기여하기 위해 제가 작년에 했던 일과 올해 계획을 보고드리도록 하겠습니다. 먼저 작년 활동입니다.

2018-1. dApp 지원

저는 dApp이 스팀의 미래에 매우 중요한 역할을 담당하고 있다고 보고, 이를 후원하기 위해 물심양면으로 노력하고 있습니다. 스팀 파워로도 지원을 하지만 개인적으로도 종종 연락하거나 만나뵈며 도움드릴 수 있는 부분은 최대한 도와드고자 애쓰고 있습니다. 스팀헌트, 테이스팀, 트립스팀, 디클릭, 엔토파즈, Kpop스팀 등에 제 스팀파워를 임대중이며, 현재도 추가적인 dApp 런칭을 논의하고 있습니다. 그 중 하나는 국내 10위권 커뮤니티를 운영하는 곳인데요, 멋진 런칭을 할 수 있도록 열심히 노력하겠습니다.

2018-2. 발표 및 토론회 참석

작년에는 분에 넘치게 많은 발표와 토론 기회가 있었는데요, 나름대로 스팀에 대해 계속 언급하고 있습니다 ^^ (그래도 어떤 곳에서는 스팀만 얘기하면 너무 티가 나서 슬쩍씩 껴넣기도 합니다) 국회에도 두 번 다녀왔는데 자리보다는 만나뵌 분들이 좋았고, 학회에서도 여러 학계 교수님들과 교류할 수 있어서 정말 유익했습니다. 이런 분들의 지식과 능력의 도움을 받아 스팀이 더 발전할 수 있도록 노력하고 있습니다.

2018-3. 카카오벤처스 파트너

감사하게도 카카오벤처스에서 저를 좋게 봐주셔서 밸류업 파트너로 참여하게 되었습니다. 대표님부터 시작해서 모든 분들이 정말 좋은 분들이고 스타트업들을 진정으로 생각하시는 분들이라 즐겁게 일하고 있습니다. 지금 스팀의 dApp들도 언젠가는 카카오벤처스와 인연을 맺게 되면 정말 좋겠습니다. (그렇죠 대표님?)

그리고 아래는 2019년 계획입니다

2019-1. dApp과 SMT

SMT가 나오면 스팀 dApp 생태계는 지금과는 확연히 다르게 돌아갈 것입니다. 그 때를 대비해서 디앱들과도 미리 준비를 해야하고, SMT에 대해서도 윤곽이 잡히면 일반 사용자에게도 많은 교육이 필요할 것입니다. SMT가 미뤄져서 안타깝지만 구체적인 안이 나오는대로 계속 보고드리겠습니다.

2019-2. 사용자 유입, 인증, 기본소득

아마 이것이 올해의 가장 큰 프로젝트가 되지 않을까 싶습니다. 스팀의 제일 큰 문제는 사용자 기반이 약하다는 것인데요, 이를 해결하기 위해 기본소득을 사용할 수도 있습니다. 기본소득은 예전에도 소모임지원이나 짱짱맨 등에서 많이 시도가 되었는데, 어뷰징 문제로 인해 어려움도 많았습니다. 이를 해결하고자 실명인증을 통한 기본소득을 도입하는 것이 올해의 목표입니다. 이를 위해 증인소득 일부로 가입비를 지원할 계획이기도 합니다.

2019-3. 경제모델 개선안 제안

스팀 경제모델을 아직도 문제가 많습니다 (가치 유출, 특정 부분에서 한계생산비용이 적은 문제 등). 이를 개선하기 위한 안을 내놓고 실제로 긍정적인 변화를 만들어내는 것이 올해의 또다른 목표입니다. 지금은 SMT에 집중하고 있어서 좋은 때가 아니지만 SMT가 나올때 쯤부터 열심히 주장을 펼치도록 하겠습니다.
