Thoughts on Target Votes Per Day
Introduction
A recent release candidate announced a vote balancing that decreases target votes per day from 40 to 5. After some debates, this seemed to be retracted in this github commit. This makes me to start thinking about the numbers (votes per day). What values are appropriate based on each specific purpose? I want to write about it based on my statistics posted here.
1. To Reduce the Domination of Bots
We can see the average N of potential bots are 1,410 (during 26 days), so about 54 votes daily. Meanwhile, the next most active voting group (Village builders) has about 31 votes per day. If we choose 30 as a daily target number of votes, we can significantly reduce bot activities while not seriously damaging active curators.
2. To Reduce Voting Concentration
Among four groups, the latest two (Village builders and Superhumans) have meaningfully higher Max (over 60. Please note that voting weights are considered) and high StDev (over 6.00). This implies their votes are concentrated on some few writers. If we want to alleviate voting concentration by these groups, we can reduce daily voting target to 25, which is the average of Hidden gem explorers. This may discourage community building activities, but a curator still can work with less generous curation or reduced voting weights.
3. To Equalize Influences
This is somewhat egalitarian's choice, that has both pros and cons. If we take the average of three groups (Superhumans is excluded), we can get around 20 (18.58 actually). This number will discourage all other groups (except Lazy Lions), which consist 83% of influences. While this will disperse influences to more curators, this may result in some drawbacks.
This is just a draft of my thoughts. Please tell your thoughts.

Did I read that right... the 40 vote max power to 5 vote change is not going to happen tomorrow?
There are some issue in the 14rc and the hardfork is postponed iirc
Oh wow, did not know that... thanks for sharing.
Me either.
it also mentions prevention of wasted steem. Currently it takes forty votes in a twenty four hour period to use up all your steem. If you don't use it then it's wasted. The idea is to prevent waste.
A good thought. Currently (probably) usually bots have no waste. IMHO 40 is too high.
The way it was the vote POWER started off high. After the first four votes the POWER fell off a cliff. The fifth vote was rate at 3/4, the seventh at 1/2 the nineth was less than 1/4 and from there it just got less and less. HOWEVER, the tail was looooooong. Long enough that it took forty votes total to use up all the POWER. Most people didn't bother to use up their votes...why bother with something that was worth hundredths or thousandths of a penny?
System wide a thousandth of a penny times over eighty thousand users addded up to some serious change. And it was wasted. (poof) gone gone...bye bye.
Under the new system starting right about now....you have a throttle. You can vote five time at FULL power...or select any percentage you want for any given vote. you could have ten votes at half power. twenty votes at a quarter...or any mix and match selection that you want.
Much gooder I think.
One more thing. Always vote for yourself. If you don't it's like leaving change on the sidewalk. Remember...all those pennies can add up.
So I understand around 20 votes per day should be a good average?
It depends on targets what we want to achieve, and there is no good numbers nor bad numbers imo
Another thing is at 5 votes a day, you could spend nearly all of them on your own posts and forget about upvoting anyone other than yourself.
Well, you could do that but then that would be it as I don't think anyone else would vote for such a person gaming the system.
Great thoughts but I think that this is something that can be worked on as the community grows here on steemit. It is still in beta and there are a lot of changes almost everyday. We will get there as long as we keep using steemit. We have to use it for it to succeed.
