Because ants are always present in your homes and communities, I'd like to take this time to educate you on the anatomy of the ant.
According to their biological classification, the ant belongs to the kingdom Animalia, phylum Arthropoda, superclass Hexapoda, class Insecta, subclass endopterygota, order Hymenoptera, suborder Apocrita, and family Formicidae.
Ants have a watertight exoskeleton, six legs, and a tiny waist. The head has two antennae protruding from it. Various forms, or castes, within a species have different structures depending on their role in the colony. The muscles that power an ant's legs and wings are found in the thorax. Hemolymph is a blood-like fluid found in a bodily cavity called the hemocoel. Pheromones and toxins are produced by many glands. Ants breathe by tracheae, which are tubes.
For sensory information, ants rely significantly on their antennae. Organs for touch, taste, smell, and hearing are found in the antennae. Ants primarily interact with one another by sending and receiving chemical signals. The crop, a component of the digestive system of many ants, serves as a food storage organ.
Food is regurgitated by ants for the benefit of their family. In Malpighian tubules, nitrogenous waste is excreted. Ant colonies are commanded by a queen who lays all of the colony's eggs. When the colony becomes too large, winged adult ants leave in search of a new home. Ants are tiny insects that live in colonies or social groups. There are about 10,000 different species of ants, and they can be found in practically every terrestrial (land) ecosystem on the planet.
