This is a fun experiment for children.
Who knew science could be so interesting and exciting, with science, there is always something new to learn!
In this lesson you can not only teach the students communications skills, but they can enjoy getting creative and learn about sound transmissions.

Before beginning the experiment, as educators we need to explain to the children how sound is transmitted through the pretend phones that we make using plastic cups.

To transmit a sound, a source is required to vibrate and make frequencies audible. Vibrations will travel through any solid, liquid or gaseous medium as longitudinal waves. When we speak into a plastic cup that is joined to another cup through one of the above mediums, the sound waves will emit and cause vibrations, which we can then listen to on the receiving end.

What do the children need to do the experiment?

• Two plastic cups, either for each child or for groups of two.
• Rope or wool, enough for the experiment.
• One large needle, to pierce the plastic cups.

Observation: We must remind children that the string must always be taut so that the sound that is transmitted arrives without interruption. The rope must not come into contact with anything else, as it loses the ability to transmit the information.

When the students are finished making the phones, we will ask them to verify how the sound is transmitted through the plastic cups. Each child will speak, one at a time, to make sure that they are listening and functioning correctly.

At the end of the science project, each child will talk about their experience and tell their classmates how this activity made them feel.
