Eruption In The Philippines

The Philippines' most active volcano, Mayon Volcano, rumbled back to life Sunday with lava rising to its crater.

More than 15,000 people have been displaced from their homes as the volcano has risen to a level 3 alert! Lava was seen flowing almost half a mile down into a gulley near the crater. Thick clouds are engulfing the mountain making it hard to track, but the area is on high alert.

"Because of continuous rains in past weeks, debris deposited in the slopes of Mayon could lead to lahar flows. If rain does not stop it could be hazardous."

The last time lava flowed from this volcano was in 2014 and over 63,000 fled. There are high concerns that it will begin to violently erupt.

"We think the lava now is more fluid than in 2014. This means the flow can reach further down (the slopes) at a faster rate, we see similarity with eruptions where the first phase of the activity started with lava flow and culminated in an explosive or hazardous part. That's what we are trying to monitor and help people avoid."

Disaster response officials have stated that more than 15,000 people have been removed from the high-risk areas and many are sure to follow. There is some resistance but if the alert is raised to a level four they will be forced to evacuate. Since Saturday there have been three steam explosions. Airlines have also been advised to stay clear of the area.
