Does Your Brain Protect You Or Hinder You?

in #life8 years ago (edited)

Our brains are a really weird organ. Did you know they have a bizarre defense mechanism that actually might be holding you back?

The brain is a complex part of our body and has over 86 billion nerve cells and is the largest brain of all vertebrates relative to body size. It has the unique left and right creative to logic sides. And one could argue that the evolutionary push or advantage that we received increased the capacity for what our brains were capable of. But are they designed to make us fail?

Source

Our brains become used to habit or comfort. Most will actually develop an autocorrection system if you will. By this I mean it will try to keep you in these areas. It's actually a little link to everyday anxiety or anxiety as an illness. For example, when we get excited about something, but shortly after our brains will bring up past fears or experiences to keep you in a more realistic mindset. It's doing its job, unfortunately, but it is to protect us. But again, this isn't always a good thing. New things can scare the brain. If doing a certain thing or habit has kept you alive for so many years, why would you ever change this? That's the way our brains will look at it.

So our brains think they're protecting us. And in fact, they will protect us from big changes usually acting like they never happened or don't notice. There was a study done a while back, but unfortunately, I can no longer find the actual source to this, but what would happen was a customer would walk up to a person behind the counter and ask where an item is. The worker would begin to answer and drop something, bend over and a new person would pop up out of nowhere finishing the answer. Most people didn't even react to this or just stood there for a moment because their mind couldn't process where this new person came from or if they were talking to this person the entire time. Another example could be your grandparent. Most grandparents or elderly won't accept change at all. They'll avoid it and deny it half the time. If they're taught a certain way it will take a hell of a lot more than you telling them to even make them consider changing their minds. You could call it denial, and partially it is, but again, it is their brains trying to protect them. It's actually a very dangerous thing, because those who suffer depression (from my experience and people I've known) have often described their state of mind when they weren't depressed as lost. They didn't know what to do if they weren't depressed because it was who they've been for so long. Fear would sweep them until they got back in that depressed state. Your brain will do this with many good things as well, denying them, avoiding them, forgetting them. Our brains don't want change.

One thing you can do to counteract this is trying to make the extraordinary ordinary. By continuously introducing change and exciting things you can wire it so that success and change are normal to you. Difficult to do sometimes, yes, but your brain will start to believe in you and you'll begin to stop the trends of failure that are there because of our brains "comfort zones". Get excited about every good thing that happens no matter how small. Celebrate the little things as if they're big, go against your biggest fears as long as they won't kill you. It'll all help in reprogramming your brain into accepting all kinds of changes. This is just a small study done, but if you look for yourself you'll find them to be true. Our brains unintentionally set us up to fail. We just have to make sure we know when they're doing this and counter it. I hope some people will find this to be interesting and maybe help a few people counter their brains if it's a problem for them.
