Dark Origins For Valentine's Day
Although an actual origin to this day hasn't been pinpointed accurately, like most holidays one can look to the Romans. From February 13th-15th the Romans would celebrate the feast of Lupercalia. This was a festival where the men would hit on women by....hitting them? Voluntarily? It was all a bit weird. The men would first sacrifice a goat and a dog, afterward using the hides of the animals they would kill, they would whip the women who would actually line up for this. They had the belief that this act would make them fertile. Mostly everyone would be drunk during the festivities.

The Romans may have even been responsible for the name, as for two years in a row on February 14th they would kill a man named Valentine. Their deaths would be honored by the Catholic Church as St Valentine's Day. Then Pope Gelasius would try to abolish the feast of Lupercalia by combining it with St. Valentine's Day. Although by that time the feast was no more than a show. The love and fertility aspects of the holiday remained. If you want to see all the strange gruesome facts of the holiday, click here. Well I hope this hasn't turned anyone off from celebrating today with someone they love...or given anyone some weird ideas...happy Valentine's Day!

The best part about this holiday is the discounted chocolate the next day
What the...that's twisted! I had no idea about some of that...
I could think of more humane ways to give a girl a spanking, but the real issue here is the long vein of idolatry and senseless killing.
This is deep...
Wow, such a big insight into the origins of this day
