Yes Fasting!!

That is how I lost 100.5 pounds reaching my goal of 160 pounds my army entry weight, arrested 4 autoimmune diseases, and eliminated chronic pain. If you choose this path, be WARNED there are side effects and risks. Oh, here is where I provide the standard disclaimer: “Before embarking on any dietary change you should talk to your doctor”. However, your doctor has had no training of any kind in therapeutic fasting and is not qualified to answer the question. So they always say “no”. You are on your own. If you are over 60 and are taking drugs for health issues that fasting can manage, it is wise to fast very carefully or with a qualified and experienced fasting practitioner. Well, I checked and the closest to West Michigan is in Ohio.

Starting a zero calorie fast of even a few days without knowing what to expect is like putting an infant behind the wheel of a car already doing 70 miles an hour. How to start eating again after a fast of only 3 days is critical. Older people like me need to be extra careful compared to younger people of 50 or less. Children under 18, pregnant women, and lactating mothers, and people with a body mass index lower than 18 should not fast without supervision. While I worked up to “extended fasting” I read 11 books on therapeutic fasting, but I still made mistakes and had to end fasts early. I learned that fasting is NOT a goal oriented activity. If your body says stop fasting you DON’T argue with it. In fact, I woke up this morning on the ninth day of my current zero calorie fast with heart palpitations and an elevated pulse. I had planned to go 10 days, the most ever, but when my body speaks, I listen. That melon sure tasted good to break my fast this morning!

See the link below. The second best book I’ve read was by the same author, Dr. Herbert Shelton, and is titled Fasting Can Save Your Life. The best contemporary book, in my opinion, was written by Dr. Jason Fung who runs a diabetes reversal and weight loss fasting clinic in Toronto, Ontario.

I started by skipping breakfast and part of my life style change is that I will never eat breakfast again except like today when I break a fast. I just nibble and graze through the break day. Then I started skipping lunch too, one or two times a week. This is how I lost most of the 100 pounds. I started reading the books. Then I did a 36 hour fast and then 2 days, then three. In September 2017 I did my first extended fast of 5 days. This is where I experienced merciful healing of my autoimmune issues. I was emboldened and started extended fasting every few months.

Fasting can be abused. In late 2017 I started to get cocky. I foolishly embraced a new hobby, making chocolate truffles. Gain a little weight, fast it back off. I was in hog heaven. I maintained my weight loss and had my truffles too. Well, sugar in any of its insidious forms, causes strokes and in May 2018 I had one. Fasting helped with neuronal healing and I got 98% of my life back. However, today I take in sugar in its least lethal form: fresh fruit.

My fasting sustenance is a homemade blend of water with electrolytes, coffee, tea, and sparkling water and nothing else. If you have questions, here I am.
