DIY Roman Shades
How to make Roman Shades the easy way
Hello steemits, I wanted to share with you an easy way to make roman shades. I have made roman shades with dowel rods and the pull cords, and believe me those roman shades were not easy to make. I wanted to do it a simple way and a less cost effective way. Today, I want to show you an easier way to make a roman shade, and also less time consuming. It still gives it that same great look.
Supply list
- fabric material ( the amount of material you will need depends on the window size) Measure the size of the window then go purchase your material . I recycled a curtain I got at a yard sale. It was thick and I liked the material so I used that for my material.
- Liner ( if you have thick material you should not have to use a liner, but if the material is thin then you will need to use a liner)
- scissors
- iron
- pins
- sewing machine or sewing kit ( you can even use liquid stitch if you do not sew)
- tape measure
- measuring stick
- disappearing ink pen
- 3 tension rods
Directions
Measure your window and add 1 inch to the size to hem the edges of the width. On the length you will add 3 inches to the length of your window. 2 inches will be for the casing and 1 inch will be for the edging of the seams. Using the disappearing ink pen you will mark along the material where you need to cut.
After you are finished marking the material cut the material for the width and the length of your measurements. Warm up your iron. Start with the long sides of the material. Fold the material at 1/4 of an inch using pens in on the side where you want the hem. Iron the material ( I used spray starch). This will give the edge a nice finish.
After you are done ironing the long sides of the material, do the same for the top and bottom of the material. Next, you will take the pens out and fold it again another 1/4 inch using the pens. Iron all the sides again. Using a sewing machine sew the on all sides.
After the edges are all sewn, you will make a casing for the top of the curtain. Fold the material at 2 inches.
Now pen the casing, and sew it leaving open edges for the rod. When you are done sewing , iron the curtain so it can be hung on the window. Place the tension rod in the casing and hang the curtain. Place the other 2 tension rods in the desired spot where you want the folds to be. This will take a little bit of work to get it exactly where you want the folds to be, and placing the rods exactly where you want them. I made mine a little to far apart in the picture. I had to move them a little closer. It depends on how far apart you want the folds.
Now that the roman shade is finished, you can sit back and enjoy. Roman shades can cost so much. I love the roman shades at pottery barn, but they cost so much. The starting price is $209.00. This way you can make your own with a fraction of the cost. I just love the look of roman shades. They are my favorite. I hope you enjoyed this posts.
