제8장 천 보다도 백 보다도 (述千品)

106.저 브라만 신을 향하여
한 달에 천 번씩 백 년 동안을
내내 공양물을 올리는 그것과
자기 자신을 정복한 사람에게
단 한 번의 존경을 표하는 그것과
어느 것이 더 값어치가 있겠는가.
저 백 년 동안의 번제공양보다도
이 단 한 번의 존경이
훨씬 값 있는 것이니.

107.깊은 산 속에 들어가 백 년 동안을
불의 신 아그니에게
제사를 드리는 그것과
자기 자신을 정복한 이에게
단 한 번이라도 존경을 표하는 그것과
어느 쪽이 보다 값어치가 있겠는가.
저 백 년 동안의 제사보다도
이 단 한 번의 존경이
훨씬 값 있는 것이니.

106.Toward that Brahmin God
a thousand times a month for a hundred years
to make offerings
who pays a single homage
or to pay a single homage
Which is more valuable?
Even more than those hundred years of offerings
this one honor
than all those hundred years of service.

107.Go into the depths of the mountains and spend a hundred years
to Agni, the fire god.
to Agni, the fire god
to the one who has conquered him
