Google has removed over 700,000 poor apps
The Android mobile platform is used by over a billion users worldwide, making it a great target for hackers. One of the best ways to infect users' devices is via mobile applications. Especially if they come from the official Google Play online store.
Google is aware of this and there are a lot of rules and verification systems. However, hackers often manage to circumvent the measures and "accommodate" their malicious applications in the online store. Other application developers just try to mislead users to have more installations and more ad revenue, respectively.
Now Google has set up a new machine training system that detects violators with much greater precision, according to VentureBeat online. The system has successfully detected and removed over 700,000 intruders last year. This is 70% more than the company's achievements so far.
According to Statista, in December 2016, the number of apps on Google Play was 2.6 million, while before December 2017 they reached 3.5 million. Google does not provide official data on the number of applications that are in the online store. However, the growth of malicious applications is quite large.
However, Google commented that 99% of malicious applications were found and removed before someone installed them once. This is thanks to the machine learning system that analyzes applications, their code, content and behavior. It is quite effective, and Google even claims that the chance to install a malicious app through Google Play is 10 times smaller than any other source.
The company also says it has identified and blocked 100,000 malicious developers in 2017. They have been denied access to Google Play, and there are improved systems to expose attempts to create other profiles for spreading dangerous apps. Apparently, the company does not give details of how their systems work to help hackers get around them. However, measures will continue to improve to remove even more malicious applications this year.
