Book Review -Day 7

in #literature8 years ago

Hello, Steemheads. Welcome to book review day 7. Every week, I will be talking about one or two books I enjoyed reading. I call myself ‘irregular bookworm.’ I love books like that, I can’t help it. Bibliophile and nerd sound too serious. LOL. The books I’ll be talking about may be your best or worst books, so read with an open mind.

The previous weeks' reviews have been good so far. I’m kind of combining both African literature and books from all parts of the world. They are mostly literary fiction.

This week, however, I’ll be talking about two books written by one of the most sublime authors, John Grisham. He is one author you won’t regret reading. I’m yet to find someone who doesn’t like his books. John Grisham is all about crimes, the law and people who break it. I’ll give a general overview of the books and my thoughts on them.

The first is The Pelican Brief.

The story follows Darby Shaw, a twenty-four year old undergraduate law student of Tulane who wrote a brief following the assassination of Rosenberg, the formidable Supreme Court justice. The brief manages to get to the president. Somehow, it becomes most wanted. The people who murdered Rosenberg begins to kill everyone who has read it, starting with Thomas Callahan, a constitutional professor at Tulane and Darby’s lover. When Darby discovers that the car bomb which took Callahan’s life is meant for her, she flees and begins to hide from the assassins. With the help of Gray Grantham, the reporter, she survives and is able to unearth the killers and the shady lawyers.

Here’s an excerpt:

The doorknob clicked loudly and broke the tension. The door opened quickly and an attractive young female in tight washed jeans and a cotton sweater slid elegantly through it and sort of glided along the wall to the third row, where she deftly maneuvered between the crowded seats until she came to hers and sat down. The guys on the fourth row watched in admiration. The guys on the fifth row strained for a peek. For two brutal years now, one of the few pleasures of law school had been to watch as she graced the halls and rooms with her long legs and baggy sweaters. There was a fabulous body in there somewhere, they could tell. But she was not one to flaunt it. She was just one of the gang, and adhered to the law school dress code of jeans and flannel shirts and old sweaters and oversized khakis. What they wouldn't give for a black leather miniskirt.
She flashed a quick smile to the guy seated next to her, and for a second Callahan and his Nash question was forgotten. Her dark hair fell just to the shoulders. She was that perfect little cheerleader with the perfect teeth and perfect hair that every boy fell in love with at least twice in high school. And maybe at least once in law school.
Callahan was ignoring this entry. Had she been a first-year student, and afraid of him, he might have ripped into her and screamed a few times. "You're never late for court!" was the old standby law professors had beaten to death.
But Callahan was not in a screaming mood, and Darby Shaw was not afraid of him, and for a split second he wondered if anyone knew he was sleeping with her. Probably not. She had insisted on absolute secrecy.

The second is The Broker.

Joel Backman, freshly pardoned by the sitting president just before the end of his tenure is taken from his prison cell to an airplane and then to Italy by the CIA. He had contributed immensely to the President's campaign before his arrest. However, CIA director, Teddy Maynard wants Backman dead but he can’t just put a bullet in his brain. So he gets him free and sets hum up as a bait to the people he crossed when he was a young lawyer. But the Broker isn’t easily fooled. He survives by disguising himself and also with the help of Francesca, a young woman with a sick husband who teaches him Italian.

An excerpt:

The isolation wing at Rudley Federal Correctional Facility had forty identical cells, each a twelve feet square with no windows, no bars, green-painted concrete floors and cinder block walls, and a door that was solid metal with a narrow slot at the bottom for food trays and a small open peephole for the guards to have a look occasionally. The wing was filled with government informants, drug snitches, Mafia misfits, a couple of spies-men who needed to be locked away because there were plenty of folks back home who would gladly slice their throats. Most of the forty inmates in protective custody at Rudley had requested the l-wing.
Joel Backman was try to sleep when two guards clanged open his door and switched on his light. “Thw warden wants you,” one said and there was no elaboration. They rode in silence in a prison van across the frigid Oklahoma prairie past other buildings holding less-secure criminals. Until they arrived at the administration building.
Backman, handcuffed for no apparent reason, was hurried inside, up two flights of stairs , then down a long hall to the big office where lights were on and something important was going down. He saw a clock on the wall; it was almost 11pm.
