Baxter an operator robot

in #steemit8 years ago

Baxter is a commercial robot that has two long red steel arms and a smiling face. His face is a monitor in which the eyes appear and a normally smiling mouth and that only shows a sad grimace in case of malfunction.

Since it was introduced a few years ago by its inventor Rodney Brokks (former professor of robotics at MIT in Boston and founder of Rethink Robotics), Baxter has become a case study. Not so much for what he is capable of doing in the assembly line, but for the machine-worker concept that he embodies.
Baxter is the first mass production robot capable of working together with man, sharing the same environments. Until today, industrial robots, which are very fast and powerful machines, represent a danger to the safety of workers, because if they hit a worker they can even kill him, that is why closed safety cells are used , where access is prohibited, while an industrial robot works.

Baxter is not an economic robot because it can cost around $ 20,000, however it can be little if we compare it with the cost of labor and also has the advantages that it does not get sick, it does not need to go to the bathroom or eat daily and does not carry out strikes either. Therefore, it may be considered in the future as the ideal worker and assistant for the industry.
