How do you feel or react when you see an Engineering students, or when someone tells you that he/she is an Engineer by profession?
Do you think it does not worth it, or he/she should have gone for a profession better.
I have researched and interviewed people and have found out that most people do not regard the Engineers and Engineering students, most at times people take them for granted.
This might be a misconception people have regarding Engineers and Engineering students.
As an Engineering student, whenever I engage in an argument or discussion with my friends or roommates that are in faculty other than Engineering, they normally and always have this misconception that when I graduate as an electrical Engineer that I will start moving about with ladder fixing their spoilt light, or as a mechanical Engineer you fix spoilt cars.
But I tell you, Engineering is more than that, and here I will like to let you know who is an Engineer and what you need to know about an Engineer and Engineering students.

DEFINITION OF ENGINEERING
According to Oxford dictionary, Engineering is the practical application of scientific knowledge in the design, building, and control of machines, roads, bridges, electronic/electrical, chemical, material agricultural facilities for the comfort of mankind.
They solve human problem by applying their engineering knowledge, thinking of new things and devising easier means to solve earthly problems.

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A CRAFTSMAN, A TECHNICIAN/TECHNOLOGIST AND AN ENGINEER.
(I): CRAFTSMAN?
A CRAFTSMAN is a person who ordinarily acquired engineering skill and practically applies and renders it to people in order to make a living, most at times they engage in the service of trial and error. People do attribute to them or recognize them by the name Engineers but they are not.
(II): TECHNICIANS/TECHNOLOGIST
A TECHNICIAN and a TECHNOLOGIST are those that are trained in the polytechnics, usually spend two to four years in their field of study respectively and they are awarded with NATIONAL DIPLOMA(ND) for Technicians and HIGHER NATIONAL DIPLOMA(HND) for Technologist.
They are based on practical application aspects of engineering only. They use the theory propounds by the Engineers to put out their practical work. hence, they are not recognized as an Engineer.
WHO IS AN ENGINEER?
An ENGINEER is anybody who studied and spent five years in the field or course of study of Engineering, and graduated from the University with the bachelor degree of Engineering. Then able to apply those knowledge acquired in real world issues to solve human and societal problems.
Engineers are known for their theoretical and practical application, design and creativity for solving human problems economically and efficiently.
Engineers solve the world problems by applying mathematics work and higher level mathematics to real world problems and find an economical and convenient solution to it.

It's high time we begin to appreciate the Engineers in our society, look around you, at least 95% of what you are seeing is the work of an Engineer. Engineers keep to sleepless nights to solve the world problems and make the world a better place.
As an Engineering student, I'm here to encourage my fellow Engineering students in Nigeria and the in world, Nigeria Society Of Engineer(NSE), COREN, Engineers by profession, the World Federation of Engineering Organizations and other Society of Engineers not mentioned to keep to their faith and not to be discouraged by how the society seem them to be, rather for you to love your profession, work harder, make the society a better place and make the the world society of Engineers proud.
