Movie Review: Close

in #movies5 years ago

Hey movie fans

Looks like movies have been on a bit of a dry spell this year when it comes to the big screen with nothing really worth mentioning to go and see. I've had to turn to Netflix and see what sort of original content they are producing and found a pretty good thrill ride in the movie, Close. I'll admit that I am a fan Noomi Rapace who has put in some great performances over the past few years and she stars in the lead role caught my attention.

What is Close About?

Sam, a bodyguard and counter-terrorism expert, takes a job protecting a rich young heiress named Zoe. Neither party is keen on the arrangement until a violent kidnapping forces them to go on the run. Hired to protect a pampered mining heiress Zoe (Sophie Nélisse), bodyguard Sam (Noomi Rapace) finds herself tangled in a deadly conspiracy which is much bigger than she ever signed up for.

When attackers target the heiress she's protecting, battle-hardened bodyguard Sam scrambles to save her client - and teach her how to fight back.

The movie starts out as a gritty kidnapping drama then turns into a corporate conspiracy and corruption, then it's a sort of spy movie and doesn't explore any of these concepts deeply enough and wants to be too much. If it simply stuck to the kidnapping angle perhaps it would have been lablled a female version of Liam Neesons Taken, but to me that would have been better than having no label at all, since this movie will be quickly forgotten.

What thought of Close

Let me started by saying that Noomi Rapace is simply amazing, shes by no means a season action star but really pulls it off as the supporting cast fail to rally around her and step up their game.

Close is by no means an orginal movie is not a good movie and if you swapped the female cast for men I'm sure it would be a dozen to compare it to but the female angle gives it a fresh lick of paint.

The movie has a loosely crafted screenplay that plays with ideas but necer really decides on one with some bad casting that makes the other characters barely memorable. Noomi does her best to hold this movie together and again with her great acting, convincing and touching by all means.

The emotions and the burdens she carried on in this movie were just so deep and natural and watching her performance instead of the movie itself you will enjoy it a bit more. The script, the cast and the directing really let her down.

My rating for Close

The movie starts out extremely promising but begins to narrow down and chooses not to explore a range of interesting plot lines set up in the first act. There was so much scope in the plot and so much space for growth but then the movie decided to go the easy way out which turned out to be stale and bland with an ending that will leave many completely unsatisfied. It felt like two different people made the movie, one started and one finished and there was no cohesion.

Lots of potential for a great story with an actress who really brought her A game. I would have to give this movie 6 bodyguards out of 10
