How Much Does Your Shopping Cost

I think this is a pretty interesting topic to tackle, seeing as everyone is different and has access to different produce and supply chains in their part of the world and everyone is affected by currency and inflation changes in their region. I think in general the cost of living is going up and South Africans, in general, are getting poorer each year.

I think that while cost of living here is not too bad for the middle class, the problem is the vast majority of South Africans are well below this and feel the pinch each time prices rise as wages remain flat.

Shopping has to change because of this and even I have begun to scale down over the years to reduce my inflation burden. I live a very simple life and I don't need much so here's a rough estimate of my costings.

Utilities

• Internet/Telephone - SBD 51
• Satelite TV - SBD 55
• Cellphone - SBD 58
• Water - SBD 12
• Electricity - SBD 44
• Rates - SBD 12

Total - SBD 232

Groceries

I'll run off a few prices of items but as you can imagine each shopping list is different prices will change but I think its easy to give you rough range of what you can spend on groceries in a month

• Bread - SBD 1
• Milk - 6L - SBD 5.3
• Chicken - SBD 5.8
• Cereal - SBD 2.35
• Tea/coffee/hot chocolate - SBD 4.7
• Rice - SBD 1.94
• Butter - SBD 4.7
• Olive oil - SBD 3.7
• Cheese - SBD 3.8
• Cleaning supplies - SBD 12

Rough total - SBD 150 - 200 depending on brand and where you shop

Miscellaneous costs

• Cleaning/Domestic worker - SBD 56
• Sports/soccer costs - SBD 23

Total - SBD 79
