Banana tree Although it is called "tree", this is not really a tree, but a plant that grows several meters high. This is why the trunk of the banana "tree" never turns into wood like other trees. The banana stem is made entirely of tightly wrapped banana leaves.

And there is another strange thing, banana is a fruit as well as a berry, according to botanists a berry is a simple fruit that grows in clusters from a flower with a single ovule. A characteristic of berries is that there are many seeds in each fruit. Therefore, like all the nutrients in the berry genus, bananas also contain them.

So we also have three banana trees in our house. So like we, birds, squirrels and parrots are waiting for to get their share. Because I strongly believe that we get a suitable reaction from the universe for every action we do. So really, the little things that I get However, by sharing it with another person, I get a lot of happiness that cannot be expressed in words. So I believe that we can never buy that humble happiness for money.

So I would like to tell you, dear friends, to share what you have with others in a way that you can, because sharing is really a very valuable thing.

By the way Also, there is a real difference in the meaning of the two words Banana and Plantain, which are used to refer to bananas in English. Although most people in Sri Lanka use both of these interchangeably, banana is only used as a dessert for bananas. The word Plantain is used for bananas that are eaten as a cooked food. Accordingly, sugar bananas should be called bananas to be eaten as a dessert when gray bananas are ash plantains.

The honor of naming the plant genus Musa, to which both types of bananas belong, belongs to Carolus Linnaeus, a Swedish botanist who lived in the 18th century. The species Musa was named after Antonius Musa, a Roman physician.

Bananas are thought to have originated in the densely forested areas of Southeast Asia, in what are now the Philippines, Indonesia, and Malaysia. The earliest written evidence of bananas dates back to B.C. It has been found in Sanskrit documents written around 500 AD. But according to archeological excavations, we can see evidence that the Balangoda man, who lived in our country in the past, ate a type of banana with seeds, which is related to today's bananas.

However, there is evidence in Islamic writings that eating bananas was very popular among Arab merchants. Because of this, there has been a high demand for bananas in the areas where they traded. Later, after bananas became popular among the Portuguese, Dutch and Spanish people, bananas became a widespread food throughout the world.

Growing bananas is also not that difficult, in many places bananas grow by themselves. That is why there are many small, medium and large-scale commercial banana plantations and home-grown banana plantations.

To be honest, all three of our banana plants grew very easily. We didn't really feel any trouble.

About 1000 types of bananas belonging to about 50 genera can be seen all over the world. Among these, the number of banana varieties grown in Sri Lanka is 29. Most of them have been identified as special bananas unique to our country. Also, you can see some types of bananas that are believed to have come from South India, and some species of bananas that were scientifically introduced to the country.

Bananas found in Sri Lanka can be classified into three distinct categories. They are Mysore group, Kolikuttu group and Cavendish group. Among these, Mysore category includes the most popular sour bananas and sugar bananas in our country. The Kolikuttu category includes Kolikuttu bananas as well as Poovalu, Myhanal and Rath bananas. Anamalu, Ambun, Bing Banana and Netra Palam bananas belong to the Cavendish group.

Sugar Banana

So among these, sugar banana is another popular type of banana in our country. As the name suggests, sugar bananas are slightly rounder than sour bananas and have a sweet taste. When you eat a sugar banana, you feel a little stickiness in your mouth. These bananas also have thin skin. The skin of the sugar banana, which feels a little like rubber, is green when young and has the same color as an apple, and when ripe, it turns a grayish-yellow color.

image.png

Sugar banana is also a fruit full of nutrients. According to Sri Lankan traditions, sugar bananas are the most appropriate to give to patients. Sugar banana is one of the best fruits to give especially to people with gastritis, phlegm/cold, adults and small children.

Sour Banana

Sour bananas are usually eaten mostly in our country. The sweetness with a slightly sour taste is unique to these bananas. Many people know that sour bananas are quite thin, spiky, and small in size, which can easily be distinguished from other types of bananas. The peel of the sour banana is quite thin, and the pulp inside is white or very light yellow in color. Above all that, we all love the smell of bananas.

image.png

According to the traditions of the country, many people in our country believe that sour bananas allow food to pass through the intestines easily. But sour bananas are known as "cold" so it is not good to eat sour bananas when you have phlegm/cold.

Koli Kuttu Banana

Sour and sugar bananas, which are a little less expensive, are very popular, but if the taste is too much for most people, the higher price is Kolikuttu. Even today, the two types of bananas called Kolikuttu and Myhanal, which belong to the Kolikuttu group with flat apices and very rough fruits, are still the most popular in Sri Lankan society.

image.png

According to traditional beliefs, kolikuttu is a "hot" fruit and therefore causes diseases like constipation. Bananas, very similar to kolikuttu, smell like apples. When the banana is ripe, it turns a dark yellow color.

Red Banana

The other variety in this category is red banana which has a very attractive color. As the name suggests, a beautiful red color can be seen in this banana. The skin of the red banana is apple green when it is young, then it turns gray and yellow when it is ripe, and turns red when it is ripe. Brown and black spots also occur here and there. The inside is almost the same color as sea foam. Although not very sweet, Red Bananas have a milder sweetness than some types of bananas

image.png

Anamalu Banana

Anamalu banana is also very beneficial for digestive system problems. There is a story among our ancients that if you eat swollen Anamalu banana, you can stop diarrhea, and if you eat half-ripe Anamalu banana, you can cure constipation. Along with these medicinal properties, anamalu is one of the best fruits that any Sri Lankan can enjoy.

So, in the end, I very much request you to eat healthy fruits like bananas instead of artificially flavored foods.
