Kickstarting Easter

in #blog5 years ago

Easter doesn't really mean much to me, and I would've said "holidays", but that is usually referred for winter holidays during Christmas, so be it just Easter this time.

This would've still been a regular work day, before the extended weekend from Friday to Monday, but I took today off so we have a good time to visit relatives at Lieksa with my dad - 500 km drive from home, 6-7 hours, give or take. This is not a lot considering my last visit during last autumn when I went there by bicycle (it's all in the blockchain). Car feels like a space ship after that.

You might be wondering how can I just take an off day from work just like that. Well, the job isn't a permanent one, but a series of short temporary contracts. I don't know if it's shady or whatnot, but they have said there will be work available for months at least. And if that gives me freedom to choose when I work, I don't have a problem with that. In fact, my superior said right in the interview that "if you have a two-week trip to the Caribbean, you just let me know couple weeks in advance, and it's all good". I'd say that's not a bad deal, even though there are no accumulated paid holidays that a permanent job would accumulate, but I'm not looking for a life lasting security from a job anyway.

Actually, I do have an upcoming trip soon - not to the Caribbean, but somewhere else. Not telling yet where though, because I want to keep you in suspense, but everything will be revealed eventually. Until that, I'll enjoy my extended weekend and some good company.

More and better pictures will come after I get home where I can transfer them from the camera to the computer.

Do they have to give you sick pay and pension contribution if yer on short term contracts?

They'll be saving money somehow by not employing you direct but no doubt the shaft won't be that bad in Finland compared to here or anywhere else!

Have a nice holiday - I just started mine off with a 350KM drive. One stop, 4 hrs, not so bad!

Pension contribution, for sure, but I'm not actually sure about the sick pay, I should probably know this... Oops. 😅 Not that it makes a big difference in practice though.

Going for a holiday too? Have a good one!

Not so much a holiday, more a session in London and then two day's recovery. It takes at least that long these days!

I see, hopefully the session is good in London!

It sounds like a good time to me, @celestal, visiting family, and taking a car to get there this time. :)

I also like your work arrangement. Time is pretty valuable I would say, and if the needs are being met, well, that's all that really matters. Even if there's other responsibilities, work should still be a means to an end, but I suppose there's always pressure put upon us when there's a few others involved, like children.

At any rate, I wouldn't mind such a working arrangement myself, as long as they actually pay for the work done. :)

I don't have much any other responsibilities, so it's making my ends meet really well - and beyond. Living at my dad helps with this as I don't have expenses for a shelter, so I get to save and invest most of the money. Anyhow, I still work whenever I can if there's no particular reason not to.
