Apple Devices Expect Approximately 4.3 Years Old

There are many reasons for us not to change phones every year. Some may be because the device used is still pretty good or because the budget is limited. Especially if you are iPhone users the majority of the price of the device is relatively expensive.

According to a new study by Horace Dediu, an analyst from Asymco, the average age of Apple devices is only about 4 years.

Dediu uses sales data released by Apple every quarter.

Dediu also counts the number of legacy devices that are still active. The figure reached 1.3 billion, up 30 percent from 2016 (1 billion).

According to Dediu, by knowing the number of active devices and the number of devices sold, the average age of the device can be estimated.

Apple has so far sold about 2.05 billion devices. So if there are currently 1.3 billion computers, phones, and slates (tablets) still in use, there are about 750 million Apple products that are no longer in use.

By looking at that amount in the third quarter of 2013, Apple's mean age of devices can be known. "It is estimated to be 17 quarters or about four years and three months," Dediu wrote.

Conclusion Dediu is not arbitrary or without strong evidence. He does calculate his analysis based on Apple's total product sales in each quarter.

Even so, Dediu analysis is not yet ascertained the truth. Understandably there are still a number of Mac users, iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, and even the faithful Apple Watch for more than four years without having severe constraints.

However, the performance of their devices has decreased due to operating system updates, although not a major disruption. Especially before, Apple had dicecar by its users because of their older iPhone performance slower.

Users suspect Apple is deliberately doing it to force users to buy a new device. However, the allegation was eventually denied by Apple. In a statement, Apple said it deliberately did that to overcome the problem of aging Lithium-ion batteries.

To prove it, Dediu graphs to show how many devices Apple sold since the second quarter of 2007, followed by a curve to show approximate active devices in circulation. All using Apple data output (h / t Apple Insider).

For certain quarters, the chart area below this line corresponds to the number of active devices. The area between the active device curve and the number of devices sold determines the number of devices that have been "retired" since 2007.

The graph above shows the correlation of the two variables. If you consider anytime on the X axis so you know how many devices are active as the number of cumulative devices sold, you can tell the difference (750 million devices).

Apple has so far not commented. But a few years ago, based on an ecological-related product assessment the company showed their devices could last for three years.

Dediu claimed to have never used iPhone for more than four years. But he understood that some people actually use iPad longer so Apple has a sales issue. And according to Dediu, the age of Apple devices every year just increased.

From here there are two things that can be known. First, consumers rarely update to new devices or do not follow the market cycle. Secondly, Apple's customers appear to be more satisfied with the quality of the product so as to keep their devices last longer.

Even so, Apple will still release a new device that more shiny / Last year, for example, Apple released three new phones. This year, Apple is rumored to be soon releasing three new phones X iPhone successor
